Undertray Extension to protect lips

Hey guys,

Im lowering my car tomorrow (hopefully if i can figure it out) on sprint springs on my 40th anniversary. As many of you probably dont know, i believe the bilsteins on my car make my S1 15mm lower than normal S1's so i will be even lower than most on sprint springs.

I have a concern with demolishing my lip coming up my driveway and i was wondering if a simple extension to a custom made undertray (1 piece undertray) would be able to remedy this problem. I was thinking have it extend 1/2 or 1/4 or 1/8inch past my appearance package lip in order to prevent wrecking my lip and having to replace it.

How much should i extend it in order to protect my lip? What do you guys think?

I found this post by Highway8 and was wondering if he could stop in here and lend a suggestion

The splitter is not attached to the bumper and pulling a total of 6 disconnect pins will remove the splitter/undertray. The splitter is strong, I weigh 200 lbs and the splitter supports my entire weight with the only flex being the alumlite between the struts. Properly distributed, im guessing it would have no problem holding 500 lbs.
My intention is not to make a splitter, though very similar how it extends past the bumper.

Is there a locally and cheap material i can make this out of?

I will have access to a lasercutter in september when my school opens up again, but until then i need to find a way not to wreck my lip.

Has anybody had any success with anything to help them not wreck their lip/bumper?

This is the gtspec undertray and what i got my inspiration from.

If i am using this design as a base to start replicating, I have 2 questions,
1: if i take my stock oem plastic undertray off, will i be able to trace it and get this general shape?
2: Are the louvers necessary?
2B: If they are necessary can i make square holes instead of louvers?

Thanks everyone.

If your concern is hitting anything then you want to avoid whatever may protrude any farther out
Go on your driveway at an angle and pray.

I am pretty sure that the lip sits below the undertray too

Ideally id like whatever i make to bend down to account for how much lower the lip is from the undertray, and create something that is a one piece design.

EDIT: i could also make the undertray at an angle, which would allow me to go from the undertray to the lip without making any bends. Supporting the sides would have to be done where there is a gap and longer bolts would need to be used.

For hitting things at higher speeds im sure that this will do some serious damage compared to letting the lip destroy whatever it hits, but this is for mainly driveways/ramps into my school parking deck.

Is there anything else you guys suggest to protect the lip? I feel as though the HD(home depot) lip will tear off and not protect the lip at all.

Dude just get sheet metal or aluminum and shape it to the shape of the bottom of your lip and drill it on. So when you scrap; it only scraps metal. Because no matter what, your lip is going to be a fixed number of inches from the ground. If its going to hit its going to hit. This is what my cousin did to his Lambo.

I'm scared damaging my front lip too. I just try to avoid road debris bigger than a baseball.

dood metal doesnt crack like plastic but it bends and crumples, if you hit something hard enough to crack your lip with a sheet metal undertray that's permanently attached to your lip, it wont protect it much. If it happens to come off, it'll take your lip and bumper with it. If you must go with metal, design it so it has a safe breakaway tolerance

juss sayin

yup, nothing can be attached to the bumper, i plan on using the mounting points for the undertray. Going to try to cut aluminum at my school in september.

I have a curb also coming up to my house. Just profile your car on curbs, speedbumps, and hills. If you're careful, you should not have an issues! Quit worrying!
