velocity red and scratches

it seems my velocity red rx-8 has developed some slight scratches. there are about 3 slightly visible white lines running down my 8. they are about 2-3 in. big. all in all, not a big deal since it isn't anything major. i believe some ******* opened their door without care thus scraping mine.

what can i do about this? what can cover these small scratches up. can i obtain paint that could fix this with slight manual touch-ups.

also, how much would it cost to repaint my rx-8 to velocity red (how it was when i got it meaning having a glossy look)?

velocity red is a 3 stage paint and from what im told by my body guy one of the most expensive if not the most expensive paints mazda puts out....as a re-paint your looking at some $$ depending on the sseverity.....touch up will help if you dont care about it being just touched up.....personally i would re-paint but im a little bit crazy like that

im talking about a cheap alternative for something small like this.

I would take it to a paint shop and have them fix it. I dont think the car would need an entire respray.

Will it buff out? If so, do that and you won't have to paint it. The clear coat is pretty deep.

This is why I'm that dick that parks crooked taking 2 parking spots...

I have the smallest knick on my rear bumper and a small dent on the nose I need to have taken out. Nothing major but seeing how expensive the paint is I haven't even attempted to get prices yet.

well that is it. it is to the lower right area of the picture. i found some 4.25 touch up paint for my vehicle right from the mazda site..but they dont let me order it. Do I have to call my dealer up and tell them to get it in for me or something.

also, while I am here, when my rotary accent on the front spoiler came off in a raccoon accident. when I got it repaired, they left me with the plastic version. I tried fitting the one I still got after the accident but it wont fit on. It is in perfect condition too.

Can you catch it with your fingernail?, Run your fingernail across the scratch. If you can catch it then it may not come out. if its on the surface you can get it out. If you don't have rubbing compound 1200-1500 grit or 1500-200 grit use a mr.clean magic eraser(if its just paint transfer).

Have you ever tried to use touch-up paint? The results are usually less than desirable as it's never as smooth as you want it to be. It always ends up looking like white-out on a piece of paper.

The only thing touch-up paint seems to be good for is filling in little rock dings. There is no way I would ever try to do a touch-up on a scratch - it would only make it look worse.

I'm no paint pro but there's really only two ways (I know of) to fix it - if the scratch is not too deep.

1) buff it out.
2) have a shop sand off the clear-coat and re-spray.

Look in your local yellow pages for a "Dent Wizard" or similar professional. I've seen them do some pretty amazing things to scratches. I too would try a light compound myself first.

i really dont know how deep the paint is for an rx8 but i can catch it with my finger nail. A very, very think layer is taken off from what I can see.

All I really want to do with the touch up paint is plug inthe scratch. I dont want to do anything more.

I would pull off the pin stripes too while you were at it.

Go to the auto parts store at look at the mothers and meguirs products. Those dont seem that bad they should buff out.

run your finger nail over it, it you can feel it with your finger nail it usual it wont buff out. if you want you can try a paint cleaner, polish and wax it. i perfer megiuars 3 stage paint cleaner, and if you have a electric buffer you can even throw on meguairs #9 swirl remover.

I can run through it with my fingernail.

What does the touchup paint feel like and how does it's color compare to my rx8's red.

I am thinking about using a toothpick and filling in the scratch. After that, I don't know what to do.

What kind of results can I expect from the touchup.

I also found this:

I heard good reviews on these forums but are there any other good ones..

Just do what mighty red said. Attempting to use the touch up paint correctly, which is very hard, has driven many forum members insane, and it's for rock chips. And with scratches that thin...it just won't work.

im not sure but would you be able to do a "blow-in" for this type of paint damage?

edit: i use the factory mazda touch up paint for my rock chips. it is a pain in the *** to apply i wouldnt suggest using it for a scratch either.

that's too deep to buff out but you can make it look better.
