Vertical doors - which one??

Ok I have heard alot about this but I would like more opinions.

I want to install a vertical door kit on my 05 rx8. Some people say the weld-on kits are best, some say bolt-on. Some say 'vertical doors inc' for bolt on is the best.. but they are double the price of the 'Scissor door' kits on ebay. What about power vertical doors? The ones that open up electronically?

I am leaning towards the bolt on so I can remove it if I have to.

1) weld on or bolt on?

2) is vertical doors inc the best?

3) anyone have first hand experience with this?

4) What do you know about powered vert doors?

From what I've heard none of the boltons are particularly good. A few members here have the GT Factory universal kit which requires a skilled bodyshop to install and requires some welding. That seems to be the general "best" if such a thing exists.

First off, NEVER trust shitty ebay for something as important as door hinges. If you get a crappy hinge assy your shock could break, or the hinge could break and you door could fall off the car.

I have VDI on mine, and I've seen a few other cars with the kit. Mine is of an older generation, so the new ones look better than mine does. Their bolt on kit fits well, and I did the installation on mine in 6 hours doing about 95% of the work.

LSD also makes a hinge for the 8, which I have seen and it also seems to have a nice fitment. I'm not sure if it's bolt or weld.

GT Factory has a very different look as their doors open a full 90 degrees. The fitment on these are good as well, although I've heard they are much harder to install. The kids with the GT Factory kits like to **** on the other kits, so be careful if you get this one not to become a dick.

First off, your ride is bad ***.

Second, how did you make your headlight shield dark?

Third, thanx for the info on the kits.
- Do you like your VDI kit?
- Have you had any trouble with it?
- Does it take periodic re-adjustments to keep it lined up?

I have a vinyl overlay from bluebatmobile.net over my headlights.

I love my VDI kit, it's fun watching people who don't know I have it trying to get in my car. They freak out when the door stops opening. Also it keeps preggies and fat chicks away from my car, which is always a nice thing.

My kit is the old version, about 2 years old and I've never had any major troubles with it. Every winter the door seems to sag a bit, but all it takes is turning a screw slightly to adjust the door height. I think it's because of all the moisture in the air.

I think the most common problem you might face will the a shock failure. A few of the guys with the GT Factory kit have said their shocks failed a few times. Mine never has, but it depends on where you live and how often you use it, etc.

To each their own, but personally I'd rather be able to open my door like normal OR vertically.

You always have to exntend your wiring. Fortunately for the 8 it's really easy because there is plenty of slack.

You have to email Bat about what you want. He doesnt have a real website as you saw but his overlay work is quality. Seems like everybody knows him lol. Great guy.

The VDI kit is imo the best. I'm personally not very partial to vertical doors on a daily driver. Its a pain. Its fun at first but for most people they get to be a pain. Its best if you weld it on, you're going to need better shocks. Plus if you have good shocks the door feels heavier than it is so just opening the door can be a pain. Your welds run the risk of breaking if you use it too much. My friend had them on his Charger and he liked them at first but later got sick of them. My dad also has a pair of VDI hinges sitting around the house that he hasnt put on his Z yet.

i have the VDI kit, and it is definately a good kit as far as vertical doors go. the only problem i have is with the fact that they are vertical doors. what you dont think about when you're getting them is that noone knows how to use them. this means that you can never again valet your car nor can you take it to a car wash, because noone that works at eather of these places would know how to use it, and would probably end up breaking the hinge. Every time i get it serviced i actually have to make signs that i put on the windows to warn the techs about the doors. basically what im saying is that you have to prepare yourself for the enormous hassel that vertical doors bring.

I get mine washed and valet a lot. I just tell them to open the door outwards and then up. I also adjusted the passenger side door so that it doesn't open up as wide as mine does, that way people can't open the door too hard and hurt my FRP fenders.
