Top Mount Intercoolers(TMIC) are usually put under a hood scoop. Like the WRX's and STI's. Old Celica All Tracs had TMIC's under an hood scoop.

TMIC usually have less piping but develop a lot more heat soak, which would be pretty bad for the RX8 since it produces so much heat under the hood(Heat Rises). It wouldn't be too hard for a body shop to make this scoop functional, but if you are goin FI, Water/Air Top Mount, or a Front Mount IC would probably be a lot better.

I think that looks hella cool. Add my name to the interested list. I'd totally buy that, and would be interested in having my OEM hood cut to make the intake functional as well as stylish

Zoom44... how do you know the concept car had this? Post the url? I haven't heard of an implementation of that in the perf. forums. Also, are you interested in the hood.. if so, please add you're name to the list.

I've always loved the hood since picking up that issue of SPEED last year. As long as the prototype looks like the white MS, I'm interested in seeing it.

Question for you guys ... is there any real point in making the scoop functional if I don't plan on forced induction?

Functional or not, it still looks f'ing awesome!

Even if you're not considering FI, I think you could go either way. It could probably be used to cool the engine or perhaps to function as a RAM air device kinda like how the RB ram air duct works -- it's probably a stretch and not even worth it, but hey, I'm just throwing ideas.

My main concern is weather -- what if it rains, snows, etc. I've seen some hood scoops with covers to prevent water/crap from entering the engine bay.

Anyone care to comment on feasibility of FI/non-FI applications for a hood scoop on the 8?

1 more!!!

a few posts back, hookupshop said:

I talked to my carbon guys...they are more than happy to create this hood scoop in real carbon fiber if we have 20 buyers or more.

If we have a list of 20+ people interested, we can begin to make a prototype hoodscope first.

Final price for carbon fiber hood scoop will be determine by how long the process take to make the mold and carbon fiber material involve. :D
I know that we're on the Internet and everything, but I expect people to keep to their word -- especially vendors. Otherwise, their reputation starts going down the tubes. Obviously there's not that much money in product a low volume of a handfull of people and that's why their asking for 20 people; they have to profit from it. I'm quite positive we can find the amount of people he requested -- we're only 1 person shy!

They were the first ones to offer to do such a job, so they've got first dibs. I look forward in doing business with hookupshop -- from what I've seen, they make good products and have a decent rep. I can't wait to see this happen.

If they won't do it, then we can always find some other shop that's willing to make some $$$ off of us. :D

I am pretty sure that Evo-R makes the products for hookupshop. Hookupshop is just a vendor for evo-r on the west coast I think.

Hookupshop's "carbon guys" are going to make this if there is a interest..not Hookupshop.

Anyways, I just wanted to see if hookupshop is still interested in making this happen, since he hasn't posted in this thread for a while.

If someone were to use this as a functional scoop, it would have some cooling effects for the heat produced under the hood. Vented hoods would probably be more efficent for this kind of application though.

I don't think you would have to worry too much about rain and snow if this were made functional. A mesh grille may be efficent enough for protection. I think vented hoods have more problems with rain and snow.

At high speeds, you're swallowing rain anyways. :D

Maybe one of us should PM Hookupshop to update them and see if they're still interested, or if we need to find someone else to do it

If they don't respond to the PM or don't post here soon, I will email them and see whats up.

Also, do you guys think it would be better to get this unpainted rather than CF?

While I'd rather have mine painted, I'd take it CF just to have it and get it painted later

Yeah, I wouldn't mind having this in CF if I had a CF hood, but even with a CF hood, I wouldn't know how well the weaves would match up.

Rhequiem, have you heard anything from Hookupshop. I would like a painted version now that I think of it. If this doesn't happen I think I'm gonna go with a Seibon hood.

I'd like this hood scoop on the white car but would want to wait and see what the fitment ends up being like. I don't want to dump $200+ plus painting for a POS.
