Window Tinting: What percent, how much, and pictures
#26
I see your point Tig. It would give it a more uniform look. With the mirrored tint the separation
between the two windows would be more pronounced.
I also realized that it may make the dark black borders around the rear side and rear window more noticable with the mirrored tint. hmmmmm decisions, decisions.

Xero, I really like the 32% tint. Do you have any trouble with visibility or anything? Also, in the pictures, it seems as though the front two windows are lighter than the two smaller ones and the back.
In California, they have no law for the amount of tint on the rear windows, but the front windows they say they need to be 70%. That's rediculous in my opinion but oh well. I see plenty of cars with tints.
Xero, do you think 30% would be good? I just don't want to have a problem with visibility or making it extremely obvious to cops (example: straight black, you can't see anything at all, basically limo tint)

visibility isn't an issue at all, sometimes i wish i went just a tad bit darker...i had 5% on my SMZ and my Integra and i could hardly see backing up at night...also changing lanes was interesting at night as well when shouldering...
the fronts look lighter because 1) the windshield isn't tinted...2) is was extremely bright that day and because of #1 it made the windows look lighter...i'll see if i can find some other pics for ya,..

So here's my dilemma. I stopped by Flying Windows today to see about tint. After speaking with the owner on their selection I decided on the reflective mirror tint. He had two shades one darker than the other. I chose the lighter of the two.
But, I'll let the pictures speak for themselves. I*'m happy with my 35% mirrorISH tint.
It is Lumar and he says it provides best protection against UV's. He said that in HIS opinion the mirrored film looked better on black cars(especially the 8), so I set an appointment for this Sat.
When I get home and log into the forum. I started looking at some of the pics posted of the black 8 with non-mirrored tint. Saw some really nice ones too! Now I find myself questioning my decision. Can anyone give me their opinions before Sat?

rx8wannahave,
Dude, I was there about 4:00pm. As I was getting out of my car a white 8 drove by very slow but didn't stop. I thought it may be you but then I remembered yours was black also. I look forward to seeing the pics! This decision has been on my mind all day. I want to make the right decision. I don't want to be disappointed afterwards.

I was on tindude.com forum last night. I was reading what some tinters were saying about tinting
the 8. They say it's a very easy car to tint especially the rear windows(due the the suicide doors).
One guy felt bad because he thought he was overcharging his customers because it was way too easy.

Well, I setup an appointment for Monday at this other tinting place. For $200 I'm just a little scared of the quality of job they are going to do.
I went to a high quality tinting place whose been around for over 30 years now. They charge a little more ($275) but this is an RX-8, it deserves the best right? hah.
Anyways, I went in there today to look at the kind of tints. They have three kinds, low, medium, and high (20%, 30%, 50-70%ish don't know exactly the last one) I talked to the person and she was saying that I should get the 30% because if I get a 20% I'll for sure get a ticket considering that the 8 has little light already coming into the car. I talked to her saying that I like the stock tint on the back windows of my old Blazer and she said that stock tint is usually 20%. I think 20% would look really nice on the sunlight silver 8, but I am just scared of getting a ticket. They said they will take it off free of charge if I do get a fix it ticket. Will they actually ticket you or tell you to go take it off?
I don't want it to be too dark, but I don't want it to be too light either, so it's hard to decide. She also said that I could do 30% on the front four, and then limo tint on the back, but I don't want visibility problems so I am going to keep either 20% all around or 30% all around. What are your thoughts?
P.S. Also take in mind that my Dad will probably not let me get 20% tint because he's a little catious about illegal stuff (won't let me take off front license plate either), but I can always try if you guys think 20% would be the best look.

20% is pretty dark...avoid the hassle and get something higher. I wish I could have gotten 30%...the guy I went to only had 20-35-55....I wanted to get 30%, Arrrrr
But, at 35% my tints look great. I'll post (MORE/day time) pictures later today...
Note: $275-200...WOW, yet another reason I would not like to live in CA...LOL
CA is a real nice state (never been there) from what I've seen but that price is SCARY!!!

Yea, the price is a lot steeper than other states lol. Oh well, the 8 deserves the best. I think I'm going to get the 30% all around. Should be good enough hopefully cause Xero's is 35% all the way around and it looks pretty dark to me coming from the pictures.

Nice rx8wannahave, get the car clean! lol
I want to get 30% all around but my dad is saying that I'm going to get pulled over and all this stuff, when in my eyes, 30% isn't that dark at all. There are plenty of people around here that has almost pitch black all around.
Sucks because California, the fronts have to be 70% or lighter and that's basically no tint at all and would look stupid if I had 70% in the front and then 30% for the back three. If my dad makes me get 70% on the fronts I'm not even going to tint my windows I think, it's pointless and a waste of $275.

Got tint done this morning. Went with 15% all around. It's not legal by Florida law but looks great. I decided against the mirror tint. Glad I did, this looks so much better than I thought.
Guess I'll have to keep a little extra cash in the bank for any future tickets. I'll try to post some pics today.

Well, just came back from the tinting place and dropped my 8 off. After about 20 minutes of deciding between 20% and 30%, I thought, "hell, if I'm going to get ticketed for my tint, I may as well have it dark" So I got 20% all around.
I was worred about getting 30% and not being happy with the results and it just being too light, but I'm also worred about 20% as being too dark lol, too bad they didn't have a 25%.
I think 20% should look good on the Silver 8, we'll see, I pick it up at 5 today.
