Yes you can. You need to hack it.
I don't know how but I know who can do it.
However, most of them are across the world.
Japan.
Singapore.
and my friend in Bangkok, THAILAND.

Pics with how-to on what he really did, or it didn't happen.
I've seen people pull the nav display out and put a touchscreen in, allowing them to control a car computer and play DVD's from it.
I've seen people use an external box that splices into the nav screen wiring and allows you to push a different source to it (such as a DVD player or backup cam)
Never seen anyone make the OEM nav drive do anything but read map disks.
The problem is that DVD-RAM drive in the OEM nav unit itself does not play DVD movies. Nor is there any way to enable it to play DVD movies, seeing as the hardware itself lacks the various CSS and MPEG2 decoders needed to play them.
Your friend in Thailand isn't hacking the OEM DVD drive. I don't doubt he can get DVD video on the nav screen from an external source, but I will not believe he can hack the OEM drive to play DVD movies until I've seen exactly how it was done, not just a pic of a DVD playing on the OEM nav screen.

Not a carputer.
Pix from the my friend's car.
Turn out that he did not do it, but he knew a technician who can do it.
Technician works at Rocket Sound.

(sorry, it's all in Thai)
Latest new is that he able to swap Garmin NAV in to Mazda NAV and make it usable in Thailand. (Mazda does not have any map for Thailand)
09 RX-8
Same hack can be apply with pre-09 model.

LOL that is clearly not the factory nav, seeing as it is in place of the stock stereo. That's the corksport or metra kit with an all-in-one headunit. The factory nav is screen is on the dash piece above the middle a/c vents and red screen. The navigation unit (where the disk goes in) is in the center console in the rear, below the pass-through to the trunk.
As most other people have said, no way to do it without adding a separate dvd player and getting a unit to add an input to the screen. At that point, you may as well just do a car computer- can be just as cheap and has a ton more features.

I have not played with an 09, but looking on Mazda's website that does appear to be the 09 stock HU with navi, and it does appear to be playing a DVD.
No way you can possibly do that on an 04 to 08 AFAIK. If he's got a firmware flash or something. I will be willing to commit despicable acts to attain it.
