[Q] carputer install

Hi all,

I'm looking to put a carputer in place but am stuck on one detail...the climate controls. I dont want a head unit at all so I'm wondering where I can connect the controls to work other than using the metra kit.

The headunit contains propitiatory programming to function with the A/C controls. Metra tricks the controls into thinking the headunit is still installed....

...which is exactly what you want, no? Even if you don't want to use the double-din faceplate because you're installing something crazy, you can still use the Axxess module.

You're essentially asking for exactly what the Metra kit does, but just want something else or whatever reason. Unless you're going to design and construct your own Axxess box, then it ain't gonna happen.

What you can do is still use parts of the original head unit.
The air con/heater uses the factory head unit circuit boards to control the setup.
What I did when I replaced my head unit was strip down the original head unit to its two main circuit boards and mount them in a box with one circuit board sitting just above the other.
I then mounted this box up in the passenger foot well under the carpet. ( I already had a big amp under the passenger seat, so couldn't mount it there ).
I used the factory head unit wiring plug and ran wires back to the wiring loom in the dash for the air con/heater etc.
This setup worked better then the Axis box that comes with the Metra kit.
To be able to adjust the clock etc I run a couple of extra wires to a couple of push switches that I mounted in the centre slide compartment.
This does involve a lot of work, but can be done ok.

had the metra kit...tried the axxess box...figured it was crap...tried to fix it...still didnt work...threw it across the room in rage...tried to fix it again...still nothing. lol not saying it was a good idea to chuck it but axxess isnt the best when it comes to quality interfaces.
