W7 is their top of the line. It is the best they offer. However, the W-7 sounds much deeper than the W-6 and most other subs for that matter, make sure you like the its tone. But again, I wouldn't go with a 13" sub, it will be very difficult to fit, assuming you want it vertical, the 12" just barely fits.

Jl designed the W-7 as their top of the line, then they used some of the technology they had developed to create the version 2 W-6 for the purpose of appealing to people who don't want to drop $750 on a sub. Same reason they have a W-3 and a W-0, to appeal to different markets. The only SQ issue with the W-7 is not a failure or the sub, but a preference. It sounds different than a W-6, it plays with a very deep tone. Listen to one and decide if you like it.

i have always liked the w6 SQ better i really think jl made the w7 just to compete with other companies in the 1000+ watt category if you want SPL w7 if want SQ get the w6 what kinda amp are gonna run to a 13w7 you need at least 1000watts or you'll be wasting your money on the sub i dont know the specs for 13w6 but most run well at around 500-600 watts and its way easier to find and afford a clean amp in that power range

i read thru your posts(briefly) regarding audio stuff and i would like to know what your plans are for your system you didnt seem to ask as many questions about components or amps and head units and stuff if you post some of your ideas and budget and stuff i am sure there are plenty of people who would respond including myself also do you have the boss system

mainly i've figured out all the components to my system except the subs. i've decided to go will a single 13' jl audio sub. right now the only question is which sub to pick the 13w6v2 with a 500/1 or a 13w7 with a 1000/1 i want the system to sound really good but also to have some db's which do u guys think would solve by problem the best?

First off,
For an RX-8 one 13W6 will plenty of bass. If you are trying to build a show car or do SPL competitions then you might need more bass.
One 13w6 with 500 Watts behind it will do about as much bass as 3 "normal" 10 inch woofers.
It doesn't go quite as deep in frequency response as the 13w7 but it is very close. However the SPL output will be slightly higher up to 500 Watts. The 13w7 will allow you to go to 1000 Watts if you really need to get that loud.
One thing that needs to be refuted. Two 13W6's with 500 Watts a piece WILL BE noticeably louder at all frequencies than one 13W7 that has 1000 Watts going into it (about 4dB to be exact). I don't want to argue that point, but to put it simply: doubling power into one woofer doesn't give as much output as doubling displacement by adding a second woofer.
If you have to go with a 13" woofer then I would go with one 13W6. (heck, one 10w6 is pretty damn loud by itself.)

I agree, its because of something like, speaker output is based on cone area and excursion. Then Cone area is directly proportional to speaker output, but excursion is related to voltage instead of power. Since voltage is related to power by p=v^2/r, that means exursion is related to Sqrt(Power.) So speaker output is related to Sqrt(Power). Thus doubling the power only gets you 1.414x as much output, but doubling the cone area gets you 2x as much output. But of course it isn't twice as loud since your ear is logarithmic. If you were to add a second identical woofer, both powered to the same level, it would result in a 6dB gain, wereas a doubling of power only gives a 3dB gain.

I like the w6's better, much cleaner sound than the w7's... I had w7's in my scion for a while, but I ended trading them out (and getting some extra cash) for the w6's because the sound was so much more appealing to me
