2006 Keyless Entry Replacement

2006 Keyless Entry Replacement
I recently bought a 2006 RX-8 with the credit card style keyless entry. Unfortunately it only came with 1 key and when I went to the dealer they wanted $350 for a new key plus $80 to program.
Jack
- Is there another vendor that I can buy the credit card style keyless entry card from?
- Is the advanced remote key the same as the keyless entry key (see ebay link)?
- Will the switchblade style keyless entry remotes from the earlier/later cars work?

Just to bump this thread up, I have the same problem. My "credit card" style keys both wound up in the washer and dryer, and no longer work. Talk about being spoiled- I HATE using the actual key.
But the 2006 key seems to be in a class by itself. I can't find a suitable replacement no matter how I searched, and I am in the same position Jack is in.
Any ideas??

Bump! I hate the stupid credit-card key. At this point, my interest is to just ditch the card keys, and get switchblade keys programmed. (Ideal would be switchblades that would work with the auto-lock/unlock system, but I get the impression that this is what they cannot do.)
At any rate, the "emergency key" part of the advanced key is just a plain key, so there's no reason a switchblade key wouldn't fit the slot ... right?

A quick update on this. I ended up buying 3 credit card style keys off ebay and took them to the dealer to get programmed. They work great, the only issue is the keys I bought didn't have the trunk release. They do sell one that does have the trunk release, but it was ~$5 more and I didn't realize it until after they were shipped as to why it was more expensive. It doesn't really matter as I never use the buttong on the credit card key anyway.

thank you soo much !!! I have a question. Would 2006 owners be able to use the switch blade key ??? Im guessing no since there needs to be a chip that is sensed by the car to start it... but im still wondering.

I've been told by at least two dealerships that no, the switchblade key they provide doesn't have the chip for keyless. But that doesn't quite answer my question; there are keys out there other than the ones Mazda provides!
Anyone know? I'm almost at the point of starting a little DIY for this, I hate that card-key so much!

Yup my question was whether or not I'd be able to use it to start the car. I thought so cause dotnt think he switchblade has a chip that will allow you to start the car.
Agentxy - are you able to start the car with it ? If so more details plz

I went through the same thing recently: my car came with only one key, the credit-card style. My "cheap" solution was to buy only the key "insert" of the card, have the dealer program that, then ebay for the card/key which will let me program it myself. Still, way too expensive.

does anyone know if the newer switchblades with keyless entry will work inplace of the credit card key? mine is just about falling apart, and the newer switchblades look much more solid
opps i meant new smart keys

Sorry to revive old thread, but trying to find a solid answer to this.
I have an 07 GT with advanced keyless entry. One card is broken, the other is falling apart. I don't want to rely on only one card, with the already finicky AKE system.
These are on eBay with
FCC ID: KPU41788
VISTEON 41525, IC : 4238A-41525
It's the OEM remote for Mazda cars made by Visteon. I know it will work for unlocking doors/opening trunk/panic, but will this key actually START the car?

It takes a minimum of two working keys to program additional ones yourself. In principle, it's more secure that way because it prevents a valet or someone from copying your key and using it to steal it. If you have only one key, getting a second one requires a trip to the dealer.
Because the credit card key will start the car, you have to have two working ones to program a 3rd by yourself (the programming procedure is different that for the flip key, btw).

Ebay also has new cases for this key. That may be all you need to fix the breaking one as long as the electronics and ID chip inside are still good.

Thanks hiflite for your quick response and the link.
Hoping you can clear up two things for me--still a bit confused about what exactly programming refers to.
Is the pdf you supplied for registering the transponder within the key with the car (for ignition/start), or for registering the remote functions with car (door/trunk/panic), or both?
If the former (transponder), would I use the same procedure for registering separate transponder keys such as these?
If so, I would then think I could switch to a switchblade setup (which I prefer) by getting a key insert with transponder (and registering it), and a separate visteon OEM switchblade. Yes?
Unfortunately for me, however, in looking at the pdf I need to actually have two working remotes (press unlock on each remote as part of the sequence). So I'm stuck going to the dealer anyway. Seems silly to require that remotes function when I do still have two working emergency keys (i.e., two registered transponders) from each credit card key.

Looking at the DIY, I understand now that there are two different procedures: one for coding a key, and one for coding the remote functions.
This is the procedure for coding a new key (that contains a transponder) in order to start the car (courtesy of takahashi):
Require:
2 coded keys (not your service/valet key please)
1 Uncoded key (Your new key)
Your 8
Yourself with a working hand
Have you service/valet key ready. In case you F up
Steps:
1 - Put your 1st coded key. Turn on to standby mode/pre-ignition mode but not starting the engine. Wait for 4 seconds.
2 - Put your 2nd coded key. Turn on to standby mode/pre-ignition mode and wait for 4 seconds.
3 - Put your uncoded key in. Turn on to standby mode/pre-ignition mode and wait for 4 seconds.
4 - Test all the keys.
What I'm unsure of is if this also holds true for AKE systems. Would I use the above procedure to code ebay keys with transponders?
hiflite, does the pdf you gave code the remote functions of a new keycard as well as code the key portion of the keycard, or does one have the take out the key from a keycard and do takahashi's procedure above?
Thanks

The key procedure you list is correct for the little keys inserted in the Credit Card remote; I just did it last weekend. (Though I think 4 sec is a bit long to wait.)
I have only one working cc remote and was unsuccessful in programming a second one, so I can't comment from the basis of success without getting #2 programmed at the dealer, and buying and trying a third one myself.
As for programming only the remote lock/unlock function and not the ID code to actually start the car, I don't know, other than my cc remote #2 won't do either after following the procedure.
Using a flip key/remote, in lieu of the cc key? I don't know if that is possible. The "key" part will likely work, but have no idea if the flip key remote functions will work on a cc-equipped car.
As long as one has 3 working "normal" keys, you can drive the car and easily replace/program a lost one. To get the same assurance wrt the cc remote gets darn expensive.

Thank hiflite, I follow everything you said.
Since I too have just one working cc remote, but two working cc keys, I am just going to buy some blank mazda transponder keys and code them so that I at least have some backups. No way I'm going to buy another cc and cough up even more money to have the dealer program it.
