Add Homelink Mirror

I have been reading some threads where those that do not have the homelink auto dimming mirror want to add it, but have had no luck.

I believe the stock mirror is made by Gentex corp.
http://www.gentex.com/auto_plo_interior.html

and one of the places it can be bought is Mito Corp:
http://www.mitocorp.com/homelink_mirrors.htm

The part # is 50-GENK40. I sent Mito corp this email:

I have an Mazda RX8 and want to add auto dimming mirror w/ home link (50-GENK40). However there are two types of mounts (camlock and regular) available. Which mounting system does Mazda use??

This is what Mito sent me:
The Mazda Tribute and the Mazda MPV have Universal Mounts, but the RX8 does not. You will need to get a what we call a button kit which is basically a whole new mount that will adhere to the windshield.

So if you buy the mirror from them, they also have the correct mount. I guess my only question would be: how to remove the old mount from the windshield?

Hope this helps some of you.

Yeah, nice job BillR. But the mirror you showed IS available from Mazda, it's the one with the compass that's not available in the '8. Is that what you meant to say?

Also, I'd be interested in what you get if you go with one of these mirrors, and how easy it was to put in. And actually, if you want the Homelink mirror WITHOUT the compass, maybe I'll sell you mine if I can get one of these with the compass to work. PM me if interested.

Personally, I want the same one that Mazda offers. I had one w/ a compass in my IS300 and I have a compass in my G35, and I never look at it. I was supplying a link so everyone could hopefully get same mirror or whatever cheaper.

Now if anyone wants to unload thier factory homelink mirror (w/ harness) I'll buy it!!!

it has buttons to learn the codes of your garage door opener.

this one is also auto dimming for night driving.

It's only available when you get the touring or GT package. Some of us can't get it, because we are either too tall (me), or too poor, or just don't want it I guess.

I think that's what he was saying.

Yeah you can program up to three different codes which helps for me now it's just remembering which button does what.

You want the regular mount. Camlock is used almost exclusively by Subarus, which I wish Mazda did as well.

I would only try it if the vendor offered a return option if it doesn't fit. I have already tried both mirrors from the 6 and neither fit the mount even though they physically look similar.

The problem with using RX8 homelink is that you don't get the wiring and it costs about a $100 more than the 6 kits which do.

The mirror should have been a separate option and not force you to have a hole in your roof to get one..

I had a friend who lives in Canada contact Mitocorp to purchase for my European model RX8 an auto dimming mirror with "homelink". This is their reply:

"On this particular vehicle our manufacturer (GENTEX) suggests NOT to remove his existing mount, so please check w/your friend FIRST and see if he’s OK w/having 2 mounts on his windshield for the mirror but only using the one that our fits. Most people do not like this solution because of the cosmetic look of it.

Of course I find this anacceptable.

Gosh, thanks BillR...very helpful! I actually was thinking about this today, I thought it would be great if I could get rid of my garage door opener thingy. Now, I would not get it if:

(1) It cost too much? (Does anyone know the price?)
(2) If I had to mess with wires, panel removal...etc

Thanks again BillR, and does anyone know about the above?

do a serarch on homelink. i have some comments that will answer you ????s

but to save time the mirror from mito is 200 bucks. if you have a car without the mirror you have no wiring harness for it. and no switched power to attatch it to.

the big issue is the attatchment button. the one you have will not work and has to be changed. if you figure an easy and inexpensive way to do this let me know.

also mazdamart has used mirrors for sale. great people wish it would have worked eaiser and i would have bought one.

I've never had any good luck with homelink--I can never program my garage door opener with the homelink systems.
