alarms viper vs compustar
any feedback on the COMPUSTAR 2WSS-AS? or viper791?
Also for those with the remote star how does it work? say you press the button to start up your car... when you actually get in it how do you drive away? turn off car then started it back up with key or what?
thanks

I had both the Viper 791 and the 790. I liked the functionality of the viper. You just have to push two buttons on the remote and the car will start itself. It works from over 1500 feet. Pretty convenient. To drive the car you simply insert the key and turn to on. The car does not have to be shut off first. While in "remote start" mode you can not step on the break or open the hood. The car will shut off for safety.
The only drawback to the Viper is that the remote is very fragile. One drop is enough to break it. Most installers will warranty the remote. Unfortunately for me I moved away from the installer and had to pay 100 bucks twice to replace the remotes.

Compustar is the bomb!
Range with perfect conditions is 6,000 feet!
That is over a mile.
2-way paging: the car will page if the alarm goes off, notifies the car starts, or if someone pages you from the car by knocking on the window over a sensor.
The remote is bigger though it looks like a small pager and has a clip that it slides out of, very secure. 4 buttons on the side. Picture of a car on the display will show doors, hood, trunk opening if alarm sensor is triggered and exhaust comes out of the tailpipe when it notifies you it started with the remote start.
It also has a turbo timer built into it for those that are looking at getting a turbo.
Basically lets the car run for a few minutes after you stop the car and take the key out. Not sure if this is a programmed thing or a button press though.
Anyone know?
As for how it functions: When you start with the remote start when you get into the vehicle you put the key in and turn it to the run position. When you step on the brake the remote start shuts off you will see this because the lights will shut off. Then it is just like you started the car with the key, put it in gear and go.

Careful with long range transmitters. If they are longer than 1500 feet then they are in violation of FCC regulations (if you are in the US). If you are caught (unlikely as it is) the fines are tremendous.

The manual states that it complies with part 15 of the FCC Rules
: 1) This device may not cause harmful interference, and
2) This device must accept any interference received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
FCC ID: N99SSTR
You can look through the report for this at: https://gullfoss2.fcc.gov/prod/oet/c...=%27N99SSTR%27
The remote start transmitter uses frequency hopping it stays in one frequency no longer than 0.4 seconds across 50 frequencies.
I believe the 1,500 foot range limitation is for a single frequency and has to be pulsed.
This is why some remotes on alarms ie: Alpine are way shorter than the remote start systems because of the continuous output they use.

true, but then again. just make sure the shop who installs it for you will warranty it in case something goes wrong. like if your windows wont roll up and down. if something like that happens then obviously they fucked up the wiring. so make sure they put it in writing that they will fix any problems if it is their fault before you let them install it.

besides if the seller on ebay has an actual shop somehere i am sure they will send you an invoive stating when and whom you bought the alarm from. if you are still worried you can still ask the seller if the item will have a warranty through viper. btw extra remotes can be bought on ebay for about 70 dollars. i will have remote engine start in about 2 months, so ill let you guys know how it goes.

Alarms to install
They can be testing on patience.
If you can read directions well then it isn't horrible.
If you know much about testing with a multimeter you will be fine and it doesn't hurt to know how to wire a relay and find wires.
If you are color blind have someone else do it because wire colors can be tough to tell what color they actually are. You don't want to toast a part in the car.
If someone is only charging $160 to install it then let them do it, that is if the above doesn't describe where you are at.

If you don't know the in's and out's of how a rs / alarm actually works and how it integrates into your car, don't even try it. It will cost far more for someone to repair the wiring than to let the install start from scratch. I use Compustar, have for 8 years.

most likely you are correct that the seller on ebay would have a shop. BUT, they would be idiots if they provided an invoice with the name of the shop as if they did so, and a representative of dei bought that from them, then dei would drop that dealer like nobody's business. i work at a specialty retailer, so i know all this stuff. another of dei's policies is that no dei product can be sold over the counter, it has to be sold installed.

seriously, if i can get the unit for 199 on ebay, i'd be happy if the shop warranty their install work. after all, the remote itself can be bought for 70 to 90 dollars on ebay. =)

i had the compustar... worked well for a while, but when i jumped my car the something in the starter circuit in the main module fried. everything else worked but the start feature. got that one replaced under 90 day warranty from seller, then the same thing happened again. now no warranty, and the thing doesnt remote start. everything else works. after some testing ive concluded that the chip in the module is messed up and not sending the signal to the microrelay in the main brain. so i just took the whole thing out.
also, on my remote (blue one) the buttons stuck and that kept it from responding. also happened to cause my alarm to go off while i was driving, that was fun! the ivory remote i had before had no problems.
