another rx8 install done, sorry for the bad quality pics:)

Hi all,

This weekend I met up with fellow rx8club member H0rde and his beautiful red 8 with the appearance package. he was in town for me to install his jl 10w7 and 500.1. here is what i came up with, sorry for hte bad pics once again, the day was VERY sunny so you cant really see any details, i am sure he will take some more, better pics and post them later on...

the main challence to this instal was obviously the depth of the sub, whci is 9", add the enclosure thickness and the need for a frount mounted grill for protection, the entire structure struts out quite a bit...but anyway, on to the pics:

here you see what i did, i trimmed the sub and the amp in red, and then put a front panel with a opening covered in mesh, that way, it gives the amp and sub ample protection while still making them visible...

this is a horrible pic but it sorta shows what it looks like, the front panel is cut to custom fit the side contours of the rx8 trunk carpet.

and this is what happens when you press the little button on the left upper corner of the front panel

all in all, though i would have personally used a shallower sup to loose less turnk space, the performance of the package is OUTSTANDING...as i would have expected for JL w7 and amp

thats a nice build, any pictures without the protective grill?

Also, where does the audio signal come from? An aftermarket HU or something from the stock one?

the audio system is tapped off the bose rear speaker output. that grille is meant to stay in place if i could get better pics of it in better lighting, you can see the entire structure better

Bing is a super-cool guy, he did good work at a very fair price for me. The sub sounds fantastic and boy will it get loud! Here are some pics that I've taken.

took this to show the trunk space left over, not bad for putting a 10w7 in.

Exact setup I'm saving up for. Looks great!

How much was the sub/amp/install?

i got both the 10w7 and amp brand new on ebay, 360$ and 385$ respectively. The install charge was 400$ including all the necessary wiring, wood, vinyl, the red light, and labor of course...all i did was bring the amp and sub and bing did everything. Sounds fantastic obviously.

you must be losing alot of output with the sub firing towards the rear with the rest of the trunk sealed off.

I think it's better this way, there's more air to move with it facing the rear rather than point at the back of a seat. It's always been recomemnded to me that subs fire backward, although that might just be for hatchbacks.

Plus, anyone sitting in the back seat that the sub is behind, would get there kidneys beat up quite bad aswell.

yeah my understanding was also that it's better this way. Losing output? Even if that's true I don't care because the amp output is only at about half and it's already plenty loud for the car.

i still think the ulimate ticket would be to remove the rear speakres, get a great set of front speakres off an amp the rear speaker holes will act as a pass through

always wish the car had more trunk space, I usually try to do installs where little or no trunk space is lost...

h0rde,
you guys stole my plans!!! J/K! I have the same plans on paper right now and the box partially built at a friends house. Except mine has the sub on the right and the amp on the left. Few questions though...
Is this box sealed or ported. I built mine to recommended ported specs, 1.5 cu.ft. and tuned it down to 32Hz. Dropped the part where the amp would be mounted so it would be flush, like your design and still had enough space. It looks like yours is sealed, which i prefer, but if I'm going to drop the money on this I want it to f*(king hit!!! Msg back here or PM me. Right now I have 2 10W3's and have an idea for them. PM me or hook me up with your installer, thanks --Mark

True - most sub installations I've seen use the trunk as an extension of an "enclosure." Like the big woof in my MP3 for example!

it sealed, it hink a ported box while doable, woul dhave taken up even more space, whcih definetly was not called for. and I generally prefer sealed boxes, thoughported gets louder due to their higher effiency, i dont like hte way they drop off below the tuning frequency I like to feel the subs dig all the way down to 10hz, and feel the energy even though I cant hear it
