Assistance needed for a headlight mod

I'm trying to black out the inside of the headlight and taillights. I'm not looking to tint the lens, but rather, I would like to paint the interior assembly. I just had 2 questions:

1) Is it illegal to do this? I ask because blacking out the interior would compromise the effectiveness of the reflector panels.

2) Is it pretty easy to remove the headlight unit, the glass cover, etc...? Is it easy to put everything back together and ensure a good seal around the headlight/tailight unit so moisture won't get it?

Why do I want to do this? As you can see, I have a black car and I think it would like nice without the shiny metal panels in the headlight/tailight assembly. I 'm sure most of you guys have seen this kind of mod on Camaros and Firebirds, where the taillight is smokey black.

Any help/ideas/tips/whatever is appreciated. Thanks.

oh boy, well getting the headlight assembly apart is almost impossible unless you cut or saw it apart since it is glued shut...there is an access panel but it is also a pain to use and is small enough you cant have any precision

there is someone who pulled off angel eyes but that is relatively simple compared to what you want to do

wanting it to look like a Camaro or Firebird, no comment on that one

it will definitely affect the output of light and is most likely illegal, but that usually doesn't stop us

really if your going to do this you should buy another headlight assembly to try it first before you get stuck with a black eye

good luck...and how is this interior/audio/electronics? move it to external appearance etc.

Hehe, I was thinking electronics since it involved the headlight and all. Sorry for posting in the wrong place :o

I didn't realize how difficult it would be to get that headlight assembly open. I might have to rethink this now. I'll see if I can get a hold of a cheap set of lights and play around with those.

Thanks for the info guys.

With WRX's you bake the headlights on a low heat 225 - 250 degrees for about 15 min to soften the silicone that hold them together.

^ There you go! That's why I asked "Oven" :D

I've heard how people open their headlight cases, but I haven't really done it so I couldn't tell you how except ask "oven?"
