AFAIK, nobody has a later map disc, because Navteq hasn't put one out. I just think Mazda should automatically upgrade the firmware to the version that is in the more recent production RX-8s.

I'm watching this thread with interest. I have a question though, eventually... . I want a slightly different setup, I'm looking at installing a carputer. I've seen the setups with the fixed screen, but I want the ability to hide it like the OEM nav unit. How hard would that be? Is it a straight swap for the cover peice?

Also, how big is the OEM screen? is it 7", 9"??

Thanks :D

I did a carputer on a Mz6 a couple of months ago. We routed it through a switch box.

When the project was complete the owner could pick the source from the carputer/DVD/navi to view on the dash or the headrest. I used info from truemagellen to get it done. He will help you or point you in the right direction if you PM him.

I just came across this thread, holy smokes!! That's a lot of work, I think I'd rather pay the extra few thousand than go through all that to get the NAV in.

But I understand your point doing it for curiousity and that it is quite an acomplishment :D

a few random related questions

i was wondering if anyone ever just used the monitor from the OEM nav to interface with aftermarket stuff like a DVD player or a carputer. i bought the base model becasue i found one that i got a sweet deal on, because it was reposesed and i wanted to work on it. i figured i could get the few things i really wanted without much trouble... ie xenon headlights, sirius sat radio, the mp3 player, the fog lights, etc... but i'm realizing this all could get real expensive for me. plus is there a way to switch to the new key system in the 05?

look in my signature there is a link to a DIY on interfacing a video source such as a dvd player or a modded xbox, or whatever

as for the 05 new key on the 04 car...yes it does work but you must program it on your own...get it cut on your own...here are the relavent links

one thread of many on key working and programming:

Holy $hit. I would like to re-iterate the following picture for all those who are planning to attempt this.
You need to take apart your whole friggin' dashboard and for the most part, the interior.
I think I'll pass :p
