Hello All,
Read the thread and decided to e-mail the company. Below is a copy of the e-mail I received back. I'm a little curious on the effects of playing cd's through the single slot so I will try and figure out more.. But this might be nice work around until the other modules mentioned on the thread works. All I really would like is a non-soldered solution that isn't going through a FM modulator. Any thought or additional questions that should be asked.
Thanks,
Stephan

1. Will this allow me to connect to external devices such as a MP3 player
or XM radio?
Feeds audio only. No control
2. Also how will this affect the usage of my current CD player? Will I
still be able to play CDÂ’s?
No, and yes.
3. Will my steering wheel function be able to control the volume?
Yes
4. How difficult is this to install?
Plugs into back of radio. Check radio for open port before ordering.
Thanks in advance for your reply.

Innovative PhatNoise Digital Media Player Continues to Win Support from Major Automotive Manufacturers as the Standard for Seamless In-Car Access to Digital Music
LOS ANGELES – August 2, 2004 – PhatNoise Inc., a leading provider of automotive digital entertainment solutions and Mazda North American Operations announced today that the PhatNoise Digital Media Player will be available this August at Mazda’s more than 700 dealerships in the U.S. Custom designed for the new MAZDA3, the MAZDA6, the MX-5 Miata and the RX-8, the PhatNoise Digital Media Player integrates directly with each vehicle’s existing stereo and steering wheel controls, plus features voice feedback for easy and safe navigation of thousands of your favorite songs.
With 20GB of storage, the PhatNoise Digital Media Player has a virtual capacity of 500 CDs, all stored digitally and organized by Artist, Album, Genre or personal Playlist. The system also includes easy-to-use PC software and a USB cradle for simple, one-click transfer of content from home to car.
“Our target customer is adopting the latest music technologies and they want a car that offers them a great digital music experience,” said Jack Stavana, Director, Accessory Operations, Mazda North American Operations. “Working with PhatNoise was an easy decision. They are the leader in creating exciting digital music products for the car, and have a proven solution that we could customize and bring to market without any redesign of our vehicles. It’s a win for us and for our customers.”
Mazda, who has been at the forefront of supporting next-generation platforms for accessing digital music in vehicles, notably with the successful Mazda MP3 specialty vehicle, is the latest major car company to endorse the emerging PhatNoise standard for in-car digital playback of music and spoken word books.
“We are delighted to be working with Mazda on this new program as they continue to prove that entertainment leadership is one of their core strengths,” said Sharon Graves, Chief Executive Officer of PhatNoise. “There is no question that we are seeing a trend towards the portability of digital music, and PhatNoise is at the forefront of providing this technology to the automotive industry in a truly integrated fashion. It is great to see these solutions becoming more widely available for the car, and we look forward to announcing additional partnerships in 2004 as other automakers join Mazda, Volkswagen, Audi and General Motors as PhatNoise customers.”
The PhatNoise system is also available under the Kenwood Music Keg brand, at Volkswagen and Audi dealerships worldwide, and General Motors has also announced that its upcoming crossover sports vans from Saturn, Pontiac, Chevrolet and Buick will feature PhatNoise systems as a premium entertainment option.

So, whether it will work on your car or not is kind of a crapshoot. It might but there is no guarantee. You can give it a shot and see... :D

[QUOTE=Tamas]That thing IS essentially the PIE Alpine adapter. It looks exactly the same, but on that picture, they got rid of the label that's on the PIE unit. QUOTE]
Doesn't the pie method need 2 pieces to give you rca inputs? this only needs one...
am i missing something?
Thanks.

They claim that they have everything in the package that is needed for RCA aux-in. There is no photo shown from a different angle to see if they have RCA plugs built into the box (which I doubt).
More likely, they include that cable as well that is needed for the RCA-in. They just simply don't have it pictured.
If that's the case, then for $93, this is the currently cheapest source of this solution.

It doesn't have to be the same unit. It could have a similar box, and a very similar interface, but it doesn't necessarilly have to work the same.
Why bother with developing a phatnoise interface? An iPod solution would be much more flexible, and useful to many more users. Many people already have iPods. iPods are available with as much or more capacity than a phatnoise. You can set up a dock and control it from the head unit (see Alpine's new interface). And you get all of the other benefits of the iPod.
The only possible benefit I see with developing a phatnoise setup is a slight break on price, but that's it.

they want to make the money and not someone else. thats what all this is about..
IF MAzda just wanted to release the info we could have had many solutions long ago.
But they want to release there own box that they can make money off of.
As for that PIE copy. I am willing to bet that it is the same unit. And I will gladly install it in my 8 to test this but I would not be happy buying it without help from the rest of the members here. Last time i did that I got stuck with a bill for 260.00 bucks..
anyway if you get it hurry up while i still have my pie box before it gets sent back. we can compare the 2 side by side...

Turn on the HU hold down the Text button and then press and hold the preset 1 button.
This, when done correctly will tell you what Version Software your HU is running.
if you do it wrong it will clear your #1 preset. if you see clear on the read out you did it wrong.

Check your software ver. With the radio on - press and hold "text" and "preset 1" button (at the same time), the display will show version. The software versions for 04' should be 9.53 or 9.55.
9.67 will be the 05' software version (updated for SAT).
I DON'T KNOW if the software version matters but its another easy way to compare HU and see.
I DON'T KNOW what the differance is between .53 and .55 it maybe bose/nonbose??

go to this thread and post your ver so we can keep track. https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...&page=10&pp=30
