Question Better bass with trunk open?

I made an interesting observation today... upon tuning my amp, I noticed that I get significantly better, deeper bass when my trunk is actually open. When I close the trunk, the bass is decreased.

I have a single 8" sub in place of the trunk pass-through... does this mean that the box is too small for the sub?

I was contemplating getting a 10" sub for a while, even though I like the bass I'm getting from the 8", but it's clearly less than what a good 10" could produce. However, thinking that the 8" fires directly into the cabin and the 10" would likely be in a 4080 box, I wasn't sure how big the difference would be. I certainly didn't expect this effect of the lid being open or closed.

Does it actually not matter if the 10" sub is in the trunk (with the stock pass-through module in place), will it still give better bass than the 8" in a smallish enclosure?

I appreciate the opinions - thanks.

What that is showing is the reason subs facing toward the rear sound louder than subs facing toward the front. When subs face toward the front the sound reflects off of the trunk wall and tends to interferes destructively with the sound that is propogating toward the front of the car. By opening the trunk you prevent the waves from reflecting.

When the sub faces toward the rear you will notice the opposite effect, the sound will get lower when the trunk is open. that is because with the subs facing the rear the waves tend to reflect off the trunk wall, but instead interfere constructively with the waves propogating forward. Opening the trunk again prevents this reflection, but this time you desired the result of the interference.

very similar in when you are in your car, with the windows and doors closed, then open them, bas increases as the vehicle is now acting like a bandpass enclosure

Yeah, I was thinking of it but found it to be a bit awkward... I'm one of those old geezers who actually think driving with the trunk open is not the correct way of doing things :D

Constructive/Destrutive interference calculations have a few variables: frequency, wavelength, reflection distance.

To say that simply facing box in a certain direction creates such interference qualities is ignoring a lot of acoustic physics.

To create sound, the speaker surface has to move air, the more air that is available to the speaker, the louder the sound.

Of couse this is different than the required volume for building sub boxes, because that has to do with the operating suspension of loudspeaker/voicecoil.

sub box creation is a funky thing, sure you can slap something togther and make noise, but making it sound its best is pure science. You don't see people in sub shops making organs/flutes/guitars, do you?

I found that deadening the trunk brings the sound closer to the "opened" state. This was on my old Mazda Protege.

People in audio shops dont make organs, flutes, or guitars but some of them can definately make a great enclosure for the subwoofers. Not all the shops but some of the highend ones certainly do. There are shops that do great aesthetic work but there are a few shops that'a all about the install focusing on sound quality. A well design install for an IASCA system can cost 10k+ to around 20k & it mainly focuses on sound quality rather than go all out on aesthetics.

Thats what I was really getting at.

When you focus on asthetics, sometimes it looks really good, but nothing is really optimized because of space limitations/material used.

I'm sure there are some really superb guys who know a hell of a lot more than me when it comes to this stuff. Like the old adage goes: "You get what you pay for."

Of course, there are likely many exceptions to this. But unless you are paying top dollar its risky.

P.S. - This whole thing by me was more of a random car audio rant than a critique of Tamas' system.

But by just looking at his box, I would have used a sub that requires less airspace for that little area.
