The reason was because when I buy an amp, it restricts my choices having to have a 5 channel amp, or a 3 channel and 2 channel etc. So, I thought that the most straight forward thing is to use a 4 channel amp powering the two door speakers and the two rear deck units. Unless the speaker up front has its own amp, then I wouldn't really have to worry.

Oooohhhhhhhhh... You mean to totally replace the factory amp.
I thought you meant to ADD another amp... I'm more than sure all the speakers are controlled with the one amp, and that speaker doesn't have it's own amp.
Well... if you are going to replace all the speakers with higher-end ones and have them amplified.. then yes, I would just disconnect the dash one... That is what I would do.

the door speakers do not have their own amp. the rear amp in the deck controls all the speakers. The speakers in the door are just mid-bass door speakers nothing special.

Huh. I could have sworn I read a post on here about little amps accompanying the speakers in the door for the Bose system. No amps in the doors makes more sense to me, though. Thanks for the clarification.

The door speakers do have their own little amps. I pulled them out when I ran wire from my multi-channel in the trunk to the doors. At least they do in the Bose setup.

I disconnected the Bose center channel speaker after my stereo upgrade as it threw off my sound.
Note I added 2 amps (one 4 channel, one 1 channel), two subwoofers and replaced all my cabin speakers.
If you do plan on keeping the center channel I'd suggest you replace the Bose center channel and power its replacement with your aftermarket amp.

So then... the amp in the back controls the rear deck speakers, and the center dash one?

Thread! I command you to come back to life!
This is all well and good info, but how do you actually gain access to the center speaker to replace or rewire it? Will it be obvious if I pull out the radio?
