CarPC with stock Nav

hey gang.. just picked up an 05 ti grey rx-8 a few weeks ago, came with the full GT package, MS front and rear spoiler. still have the rear and side skirts to go. in the meantime, i decided to get going on the interior, adding a USB touchscreen overlay to the stock nav screen, wired up the avelectronics av switcher, and installed Car2PC on the radio's aux port. pulled up the center console to run everything to the trunk.

i am waiting on a 3.5mm extension cable to run from front to back before i can button everything up.

touch screen overlay:

touchscreen installed:

all back together (or before?? not sure.. ):

going back into the dash:

the CarPC:

the RX! :

to be continued...

little update... touchscreen overlay fully installed, works like a charm. avswitcher installed, toggles between oem nav and carpc, with autoswitch reverse camera.

here's some screenshots of the carpc -- nothing else to show because everything looks 100% oem:

CarPC home screen:

toggle back to OEM nav:

music videos:

integrated handsfree bluetooth:

weather:

will update later with some shots of reverse camera, OBDII readings if anyone is interested.

also hardwired in the radar detector (bel sti driver), with cheetah mirror, smart cord placed in the dash panel blank next to the dimmer switch

thanks man... camera is just mounted with double sided tape on the underside of the license plate cutout, ie next to the license plate light. will take a pic for you. not sure if i'm happy about the location, as it's not as stealth as i'd have liked -- but then there's not a lot of options either...

I believe there's a DIY for installing the camera in the trunk keyhole.

carPC i bought barebones from mo-co-so.com since i had some extra parts lying around, so i saved a little bit. i would have bought everything from scratch but it was cheaper to get the package. basically the only thing specific to a car application is the power supply, which has a controller that turns the PC on and off with the car's ignition. i used a mini itx board for its small form factor.

this was actually in my MX-3 before, so i didn't spend any new money really -- plus someone broke in and took my monitor from the MX, which I didn't care about anyway, since I planned on bringing this setup into the RX anyway, and would have no use for a monitor in the MX anymore. anyway it was a POS and the audio processing was horrible.

touchscreen overlay was REALLY cheap.

http://cgi.ebay.com/For-Asus-EEE-PC-...item2ea8e9891f

i don't know why more people don't go this route or talk about it, but i just took a chance on it and it works beautifully. no one realizes i added it in.

most expensive thing was the av switcher, which i was pissed about. for the same price i probably could have just bought a touch screen monitor with its own proper inputs instead. but i wanted to keep the oem nav since the lock times are soooo much quicker, and i didn't see any info out there about using the nav video on a different monitor. and it has reverse camera function built in. i was worried that the composite quality would suck compared to VGA, but it's definitely fine, as you can see from the pics (though not AS good).

in the end i'm very glad i picked a car with nav since i look around and the oem nav housing is very expensive after the fact, along with the cost of a monitor would be like 6-700 bucks. so i figure i saved money in the end.

This is exactly what I've been looking for for the past year!! I have been contemplating about how to go about it myself. What software are you running the the carPC for all those features that you have?
Also, what model of kit did you get from mo-co-so.com? I'm looking for the one that you have that has the composite output or did you just use a S-video to composite adaptor?

There is indeed a DIY for the key hole camera mount. Looked pretty cool and blended in nicely : ) Not sure where it was on the site but I came across it not too long ago.

Most of them do have integrated Bluetooth as part of the bare bones kit, but external USB Bluetooth dongles are rather inexpensive to purchase nowadays. As soon as I get back to the states I'll be doing mine, or if I'm feeling impatient I'll have someone do it for me, lol.

Edit:
Due to the electromagnetic interference in an environment such as a CarPC you may want to consider a bluetooth adaptor with an external antenna to maintain proper connection with devices in the front of the car. That is implying that you're planning on stationing the actual PC module in the trunk or somewhere in the rear of the vehicle.

so far as i know, there's no such thing as bluetooth that comes integrated on the motherboard per se, the way sound and video are. even laptops have an add on module. mine was included in the package and advertised as 'internal', but in reality there is just a USB port inside the case with a bluetooth dongle attached to it.

i have since pulled that, and put it on the end of a usb extension, along the lines of what JC was saying. obviously you will need a microphone of some kind, but that's it, no other costs involved. i bought an andrea superbeam mic for 40 bucks, which is supposed to cut down on echo quite a bit. haven't played around with it too much to say if i really like this solution

USB Extension cables have saved my *** more times than I care to count. As an alternative to getting a bluetooth antenna, running a dongle on the end of usb exension wouldn't be a bad idea at all, especially if you hook it up to a USB hub up front, say if you were going to be running a USB OBDII Port access or something like that. You could also use that to put a USB camera under your front bumper.

forgot to answer this one.. but it is a VIA Jetway board. it actually has both s-video and composite outputs, which was seriously ridiculous to setup, but ended up being very handy. i actually hooked up both to a 19" LCD tv to see if I could see a difference in quality, and it's really negligible (obviously comparing either to VGA is a different story). i wouldn't pay the extra expense just have s-video.

good stuff, as i mentioned in the other thread though, the resolution would really bother me.

but i guess using centrafuse as a front end you don't have to worry much about it since it's purpose built.

Hi ninjajim4, thanks for sharing your revolutionary mods. This is exciting to see your thread because I would like to modify my newly sourced OEM nav to touch screen and install on my non nav MY2007. The challenge is.... I am not much a tech savvy and I do not prefer car pc option. Is it possible to link the touch screen panel to dvd player or what ever player and aux in OEM head unit? and other suggestion or alternatives? Thanks mate.

i think you'd be surprised if you saw it in person. obviously working within windows over composite is no treat, but like you said, within centrafuse it's a different story. everything is nice and crisp

lol thanks but nothing i did is exactly revolutionary. if it's not clear, i do NOT have touch capabilities for my OEM nav, it only works for the carPC. i hear some people have been able to accomplish this (on other cars), though i haven't really looked into it.

so that's not really going to work for a dvd player, because you need to have some way to input the touchscreen into it, which your standard dvd player will not have. sorry to disappoint. my only advice for what you want without too much effort would be to swap out the head unit with an touchscreen nav/dvd unit

do you have the stock nav? if so, how do you have it, but not have the oem wiring? if you don't, then i wouldn't bother to go this route at all. just do what alz0rz did and get a good touch panel monitor with reverse camera built in, no need for the avswitcher at all.

what i did is ONLY to retain and enhance what already came with the car. if you're starting from scratch, there's a lot more options

Thanks ninjajim, my car is non NAV and i have purchased the OEM motorised Nav screen from one of the forum member. Therefore I am trying to figure out how to link the screen to DVD player and reverse cam. how do you link your avswitcher to the screen? with the existing wiring harness? Thanks
