Try out www.ebay.com
I think the price of good, brand new laptops nowadays is right around $900. I'm sure you can find an excellent slightly used laptop for less than $900 on Ebay.

I hate dell but let me just give you an idea home much the MOST you should pay for a laptop...this one is $599 after rebate...to much power for what you need and 'dude you'd get a piece of crap' http://www1.us.dell.com/content/prod...=04&l=en&s=bsd

NEC VERSA tablet if your going to spend $900 though get this nice tablet PC even though it is sold by the evil empire
this would do the trick although you could get something that costs even less:

I dont even think I can move threads.. just ask the mods to move it...
What I really meant about 900 was that I would only use this laptop to help me tune but the ones that I have been looking at were around 900.. and thats just too much to spend I think...
Thankx for the site for the Dell laptop.. thats a pretty good deal. Just need to find out if it has a USB port which it should since one of the options was for an external USB floppy drive.. now.. 600 I dont mind spending for a laptop.. thats pretty good.... but maybe I can do better.. i'll keep hunting...
The ebay option to me isnt very appealing.. I would want a brand new laptop or refurbished from the mfg with warranty.. nothing used.. dont want the hassle...

end-of-lease
I've bought a couple laptops for this type of purpose for under 500 canadian (P3-500) - at www.maxiumwarehousedirect.com - they sell end of lease product from the other half of their business - leasing laptops and desktop machines to companies.
I don't know what kind of hardware you are using, but CAN maxes out at 1MBps, which I doubt a car uses - most likely they use the lower, but more reliable bitrate at 128kbps.....any laptop should be able to handle it - I use stuff at my work that runs off CAN at 1MBps, with pentium-based devices (custom hardware, but same generic processor). So, any scanner that has a USB or Ethernet to CAN bridge (I'd stick with ethernet, just a little safer) should be fine on anything with a little more guts than a PII-300 (a rough accounting for the overhead of Windows & all the other crap on the machine).
