As far as putting a foot or whatever through the speakers, it's really not that bad, just have to be a little extra careful is all. The tweeter which is in plain view is solid billet, weighs about 5 lbs, you could probably stand on top of those and not destroy them

In the ashtray I had a Soundstream Digi-Q digital equalizer, I actually ended up not using it as the D3 had just as much adjustability built into it, and it saved us some space/wires/etc. so there was no need for it. I've since replaced it with the ashtray lid painted to match everything.

Double din units update
Ordered the Kenwood DNX5120 unit off ebay with the awesome Live.com 25% off coupon offered through Microsoft/PayPal.
Actually installed same unit in a Scion TC with the PAC adapter for steering wheel controls and the unit has proven to be very nice. Took me about 4 hours given that it was the first time I've installed a head unit in any car lol, should've taken more like 1 1/2 - 2 hours in retrospect.
The Garmin nav is awesome on this unit, so much better than comparable Pioneer or OEM nav units. I mean, if the GF can use it without any instructions, must be intuitive. This unit also provides a nice host of options for ipod control, usb drive support, dvd and mpeg 2 playback.
Bypassing the handbrake lockout for video on the move (not that I recommend.....) was ridiculously easy as tapping that same wire back into the same ground wire.
The only downsides are that Kenwood decided to withhold native Divx/Xvid support (the higher models have that 7120 and 8120), offering mpeg2 playback only for custom movies, etc. The other drawback is that you only get 2 RCA preouts; front and rear/sub, but if you don't mind not being able to adjust your soundstage front/rear this wouldn't be much of an issue.
The PAC install is actually very easy, really only 3 wires and programming it is a matter of the right settings and lots of button pressing. Although the PAC SWI-Jack for Kenwood units does react a bit slower than the OEM interface but it works.
Just offering some info for folks that might be shopping for a double din unit in anticipation of this kit coming out. I can't wait!
Now let's all hope this $130 ish MSRP works out........

My wife has a garmin GPS and after trying some others, garmin really is one of the most intuitive UIs.
Only thing is I'm torn between a double din HU or going full blown carputer setup, which I've been wanting to do for a while. The metra kit is going to be the cheapest way to get a screen into the car compared to the jdm nav tray dash piece which goes for like $400.

I was at Auto Image a car place by my house and ironically enough there was another 8 sitting in the parking lot, walked into the store, the guy who owned the 8 was talking to the employee about the Metra kit. The employee called metra and got an estimate of around $200 for the kit. Don't know how accurate that is but thats what he said. And he was told anytime between now and 90 days for the kit to be released...
I was there looking for GPS tracking for the car due to the location I go to school. And the other guy just happened to ask the other question I was gonna ask about the Metra Kit.
BTW its 99-7510HG i beleive for the model number of the kit if i remember correctly. Thats for the High Gloss finish.

Did he call Metra or his distributor for Metra? Less than 3 weeks ago I got told msrp was supposed to be around 130 bucks from our actual Metra rep/employee, so unless that's changed (which is always possible as I'm not in constant communication with those guys) 200 bucks seems sort of steep, even if it is still loads cheaper than the other one out. Looks like I need to try and find some time to shoot over a quick note and see what the h is happenin', last I heard it was looking like end of August/early September for the first batch to ship, our rep was taking down all my info. recently (where to ship, color preference etc. etc.) so they must be pretty close. I'll try and find out more on the price, maybe the original target was 130, and it crept up for some reason, happens all the time in the bidness world so I'm sure dashkits are no exception. ![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
edit: parts numbers are on installers.com and also in my updated first post in the thread.

Just out of curiousity, which headunits are you guys considering? Im liking the F90BT from Pioneer.. Has a glossy "Piano Black" face that, and a front loading DVD to keep a little cleaner look.

I've had the opportunity to test drive all of Pioneer's new double din line. Installed in car and actually drive with them.
Coming from a satisfied owner of the D3....things I like about the newer line versus mine: Navigation is on flash memory. No more nav discs. Navigation also has the text-to-speech feature. D3 doesn't. I like the 3D view during navigation. Kinda cool. Voice assisted commands to change source etc. Small, but very useful, enhancements in iPod control/searching. (ie Letters of alphabet on the side to instantly skip through artists name) Also, video playback is now available from iPod to screen. (Had mixed results with this. Some video clips played fine, but most would not play at all or would only play video with no audio) Built in Bluetooth versus buying the costly expansion for the D3. 4V preout on the F90.
Things I don't like: Screen is a touch smaller. The D3's large screen dominates the front of the unit, as should be. The large **** and SD slot look a little tacky/ugly. NO DVD PLAYER on 700BT. If you want video, look to the ipod.
All things considered, they're better than the D3 IMO. I hate to say it, but my small opinion on how the face looks and the slightly smaller screen are soon out-weighed by all of the advanced upgrades.

do they cost the same as the D3? I would hope they're better, seems to me Pioneer was a bit lazy there for a while with new models being introduced with hardly any changes from previous ones, must have been hanging out with Porsche designers or even Rx-8 designers for that matter there for a while

I'm digging the flash memory nav, I had another deck before my D3 that had that and it was shweet.

You can get the f90bt for about $900. It is totally new, and the only drawback is the somewhat long boot up time if you have an ipod attached.
There were a lot of initial issues, but Pioneer released a patch that addressed most of them.
Talked to Metra today... They say they have currently an inventory of -51 on hand, and said they should begin shipping by the end of the month. The first are going to the "pre-orders". I would suggest getting an order in at a dealer such as installer.com if you want to get one of these.
