That was part of the point of the post - if you are going to use these kits be prepared to shell out some dough or ask the right questions before you buy, beware of instructions being wrong and be ready to mod the metra kit as nothin much fits in that double din hole.

The $500 covered the additional labour of cutting the metra double din to size plus the extra work to bypass the built in RX-8 audio amp (your cheap auto elecs wire straight into it and you get ***** distorted sound), fit the rear cam, internet, gps and tv antennas and connect up the steering column but all said and done worth the final outcome if not a little painful getting there.

Cheers & for those who dare, enjoy the project

Call it what you want, 500 bucks you sir got hosed, bad.

I had my kit installed and running in 2 hours, full GPS, OBD II interface.

Its not hard and anyone who willingly pays 500 is getting taken advantage of, at most shops would be scarce to charge 100 bucks, 150 for a custom fab.

Ease up on him. $500 is high. But most shops aren't doing it for 100 bucks either, so I think you're exaggerating a little. Even Best Buy charges $125 for any indash video double-din in any car without any custom fabrication, steering wheel controls, amp bypass, etc. Add in the amp bypass and rear cam and you're pushing the $250 envelope at any reasonable shop. Tack on TV antennas and any custom fabrication that had to be done (not sure why, but whatever) and you're probably all over the $350 mark. Plux tax.

Your analysis of cost an being 'hosed' - welcome to Australia mate - it was 5 hours of work to cut my hole bigger to a good standard and do the extra wiring mods through the car. I pay my doctor $250 an hour my lawyer $250 and hour, dentist $300 a tooth and speed cameras $350 a click. You gotta pay your auto slaves more. They got families and bills to pay too!

Thanks both for your constructive feedback and for those who want a Metra kit, enjoy.

I came here because Google sent me here after I was trying to solve my auto air problem with the metra kit - alas, all I read here and in other threads was problems and I got a solution so thought I would share.

So I don't subscribe to the idea of deleting old threads as suggested in this one - knowledge is power.
