Confirmed - Another dash/install kit is coming.
#126
yep, you could try reading through it
I haven't received a final price through them just yet, but I'd imagine it will be pretty close to their Mazda 6 kit as it's very similar, and the most I've ever seen that one go for is 189.00. I could be well off base and I'm only speculatiing though, but still, I don't see this one coming anywhere near the corksport in price.
Yes there have been quirks with the corksport, and yes this one will fit better, will have added functionality over it, and it will cost less. In addition to that, you can buy Metra just about anywhere, you can only buy the kanatech (corksport) kit from one place and they take full advantage of that. I'm not ragging people who already bought the corksport kit, I personally chose not too but whatever. Now we dont' have too anymore if we want a better radio in our cars as this deal will let you put whatever you want in your car, will look and operate like factory, and won't cost nearly as much nor be as hard to get. We even get a choice of finishes to boot.

here are some facts regarding the kanatech dash kit:
1. i dont know of anyone who had fitment issues with this kit...i have it, amongst many others i know and they are very happy with it...
2. it is available in 2 different finishes to work with the oem ones...piano black (which is a perfect match btw) and the aluminum type
3. available adapters for steering wheel control adapability
4. available adapters to retain the bose sound system..
the quirks IMO dont exist unless you refer to the display but then again the new HU does that for you..
does this new "confirmed kit" maintain the HVAC unit controls?
because thats the main reason why there hasnt been a dash kit available for
this car since its inception

(so you're stoked to drive around with those huge gaps on the sides of the opening? More power to you, this one doesn't have that and has oem like fit and finish. The reason most people are happy with it are because there hasn't been anything else out to be excited over, well that's no longer the case.)
2. it is available in 2 different finishes to work with the oem ones...piano black (which is a perfect match btw) and the aluminum type
(Metra has 2 options as well, a piano and a non-gloss similar to what the other non-gloss pieces have throughout the dash.)
3. available adapters for steering wheel control adapability
(do you know of anyone who has this installed? EVERYone I've seen opts for the PAC-SW1 as it's a superior unit, Metra's not offering it as they know this already.)
4. available adapters to retain the bose sound system..
the quirks IMO dont exist unless you refer to the display but then again the new HU does that for you..
(then it's not a complete kit in my opinion)
does this new "confirmed kit" maintain the HVAC unit controls?

This is entirely incorrect, the main reason is that the car was still fairly new and thus still fairly expensive, there was no market for it before. Now the 8 has been out 5 years, the 09's are coming, you can pick up a used one for less than 14k and the market is there now for people wanting to get one on the cheap and also replace certain aspects of it such as the lame oem radio.
Here's a few things I kniow about the Metra-
1. better fitment (the opening is sized correctly, no gaps on the sides or abs filler pieces used to patch it up etc.)
2. lower price
3. easier availability
4. single and double din options and choice of finishes for both
5. simple plug and play, no loss of oem functionality at all, no cutting wires or any of that nonsense, no half assing anything in other words. There will not be an easier way to replace your radio available once this is released, nor a better option for the money. In fact, in addition to all of the above this new kit will give us a feature the corksport cannot do, you'll see that when I post the press release I currently have in my posession.
Things it probably will come without-
1. Steering wheel controls - Most of us who have been doing installs a while know this cannot be included with a dash kit anyway as it's a totally seperate piece, and it's also a well known fact that there are several companies out there that already make very good units that provide this functionality so offering it would be economic suicide since nobody would buy it anyway. (as is the case most of the time with the kanatech kit)
I'm glad there's people out there happy with the kanatech (corksport), I probably would convince myself to be happy too had I purchased it. I chose not too as it was too expensive, and I don't like the gaps on the opening and looking at that every day would drive me nuts, especially considering how much I had to pay etc.
So again, I'm not ragging people who already have something, our choices have been limited for quite some time and some people went that route and that's great. I'm fortunate enough to have some electronic knowledge and fearless friends so between all of us we custom built mine and relocated the oem radio elsewhere in the car. (and my display works, it was 82 degrees out last night at about 10:30pm according to my car on the way home) Now we will have more choices and a better solution for less cost to us, and that's all I'm trying to point out in this thread.

Sure... perhaps I missed the details but:
Does it come with a core nav unit? Can I add my own guts, like a 7" LCD, maybe the guts of a itty bitty pc like a eeepc, and what not?
Does it truly integrate with the existing audio system from a controls and audio perspective or are there components that get orphaned, like the CD player, etc?
Does it include an LCD and possible a touch panel?
Does the LCD support analog input devices such as vga input?
If it has a touch panel is the touch panel USB capable or am I stuck with whatever comes integrated with the head unit that it may or not come with?
I know it's already been said, but a couple pictures would say a thousand words.

I think this thread has been VERY informative, especially since canary's hands are kinda tied due to a confidentiality agreement between him and his contact(s) at Metra, but that is what I got from actually reading the thread and I understand that the info we get for now will be limited.
THANKS CANARY for keeping us updated with this! I am especially glad that I decided not to get the Corksport (or couldn't afford it, haha). I trust this kit will be everything you say it is as I have seen the pics of the Corksport and am not impressed with the plastic filler pieces on the sides of the radio (other than that the kit looks fantastic).
shelldude, judging from your questions I believe you may be mistaken as to what this kit is. It is only a kit, no radio or screen will come with it, so you should be able to put whatever you want in it, such as a touchscreen LCD for a CarPC or anything, just as long as it can fit in the space provided.
And there is no reason for people to get their panties in a wad here. just calm down and be patient since we know canary will post more information as he gets it and as he is allowed to.

You want to call Metra yourself and ask about it? I'll pm you some numbers if you like, I'm sure as busy as they are they'd love to talk to you. (pffft) This thread mentions in the title itself that another kit is coming, NOWHERE do I mention it's already out yet. (again, try reading stuff before posting, it's very helpful at times )
I created this thread to let people know of another CONFIRMED, LEGIT, AND REAL option that will be released in the coming months, I'm not pulling anyone's leg here, I'm not making all this **** up, why in the hell would I do that? What could I possibly have to gain from wasting everyone's time? I'm not even getting a free kit or anything out of this other than trying to save people from buying a crappy fitting overpriced kit from corksport, or (God help them) mounting a flip out on top of their dash or keeping their radio in a glovebox etc.
For all the folks who think this is bullshit that's fine, I know it's not, I know it's real and it's coming, I mean, **** man, I've been working with them on it for crying out loud. You all can call it a "tease" or "bs" or whatever you like, the rest of us will be more than happy to have the last laugh here in about 2 months or so when this is out and we're driving around with a cheaper and better looking/working kit than anything that was ever released previously.
if anyone has real questions or is seriously interested, perhaps we should take it to pm's or something. that way the haters won't keep me from helping the people who really want it. I'll clear out some space and y'all can fill up my inbox, or just shoot me an email or something etc. Thanks to the people who have been following this thread and are as excited as I am about this. As for the rest of the people, I'm not going to argue anymore, I know what's coming, it's unfortunate I cannot post more than what I have so far, (pics etc.) but anyone in business or with a job or who works for a company or who is employed probably would understand why I can't, if not, I'll help you out a bit-

Well, it's not quite 1000 words, but it's worth at least several hundred words.
Here's a pic of the Mazda6 kit.

Man, talk about a bunch of sensitive little girls... the whole lot of ya!
I'm just trying to get a feel for what all is going to be offered. FWIW, he did use words like plug and play, universal fit, etc.
I had no idea that it was just a replacement for the front dash and din and was hoping it'd be a bit more. Apparently that isn't the case...

someone seems a bit touchy today.
When he said plug and play he meant that it comes with the wiring harness, not just the dash insert. So all you gotta do is attach your radio of choice's wiring harness to the supplied Metra harness and plug it into the Mazda harness: plug and play. (obviously over-simplified) but it will have the A/C control module as well according to this thread and it may retain full functionality (or maybe add some as well) to the factory dash display.....would be crazy to have customization ability.....
If this was more than a dash kit, such as coming with a screen or whatnot, do you REALLY think it would cost less than the Corksport?

I just see things like "bullshit" and "useless thread" thrown around and it got me pretty irritated as this is anything but that, and if some folks would take the time to read through it and see what I've been saying etc. instead of just blindly defending their purchase and going off w/o reading first then it would probably be a different story.
There's no difference between ragging a noob for not using the search button, and giving someone **** in their thread without reading through it first, and that is really aggravating to me. (and probably others as well, but whatever)
no worries though, like I said, I know this is real and what it consists of, and I'm pretty confident when it comes out a lot of people will be really stoked with it, otherwise I never ever would have even thought to mention it. Even if it is the most perfectest thing ever, there's still going to be people trashing it anyway, i just have to remember that and leave it alone.

No one's overly sensitive. Just sightly irritated by the lack of literacy.
The title says "Another dash/install kit is coming."
"is coming", still, some people complain it's not out yet, and "dash/install kit" but others ask about the screen and gps options.
The funniest thing about this whole thing;
CanaryRX8 started this thread because he got some insider info, and didn't want to hijack the corksport thread.
He was very clear from the beginning what he can/can't say.
He said he saw pictures and was impressed, but is not allowed to post them yet.
He knows some of the features of this kit, and he's not allowed to post that info yet either.
Lots of people have been waiting for a Metra kit for the 8.
@canaryrx8 - I'd like to suggest you start a new thread when you can post all the info you have.
That will give us a fresh discussion, and hopefully lose all those haters.
Can't blame them though. It's like the people that spent a ton of money upgrading everything to HD-DVD.
