Custom Alarm system, allowed or not?

I'm working on a big project right now. I'm fitting a PC into the trunk, similar to the Hybrid touchscreen thingy.

I'm not going into details of what's going to happen with the PC because all you need to do is read the Hybrid thread (https://www.rx8club.com/showthread.p...threadid=15664)

I just want to add a remark that you don't want to drag'n drop files to your car... you want a live-injection port, meaning that as soon as you park in your driveway, your mp3 content gets synchronized with the content on your server (desktop pc, whatever).

Anyway, back to the Alarm.

As software engineer I have quite a few possibilites of what I can do with the car. Because I'm from Hawaii and we have so many f. nuts here, I'm worried about my car (everyday driver, using permanent parking in a parking house).

I'm in progress of developing an custom alarm that triggers on movement within the car. Doesn't protect me from someone breaking the window but I'm thinking of making this thing external as well.

Anyway, once alarm is triggered, a high-pitching sound will be parsed through the amp. The longer the movements within the car, the higher the volume, forcing the a$$ out of my car.

For external use I would go with a bouncing signal that triggers if someone comes close by 5in to the windows... not sure how I'm going to pull that off (yet).

My question: Is that allowed? I mean... I can bust someones ears with a high-pitching whinny sound to protect my car or is that illegal?

The feature will be incorporated into the PC I'm preparing for the car. p0w3rd by a light-weight linux and customizable front-end...

I installed an alarm several years ago that used piezo horn tweeters in several spots inside the car hooked up to the alarm siren. It was deafening loud and you couldn't stand to be in it even for a second. It was louder inside the car than it was outside. You don't need it to get progressively louder with time. The whole goal is to annoy someone now and nto give them time to do anything. An alarm is an alarm. No one has any business inside your car unless you say so. What kind of burglar is going to win a court case because the alarm of the car he was breaking into was too loud? Then again, you can win in court for spilling your coffee in your lap or because your kids get fat from fast food so I guess it is plausible. Noise violations do not effect the inside of your car unless it exceeds a certain volume level outside the car. The high pitch piezo speakers we had inside were deafening but didn't really travel that well to the outside of the car. The alarm also had a backup battery in the event that someone disconnected the main car battery.

Just for the fun of it my friend has a train horn on his truck. The truck has an air ride suspension and an aircompressor so the horn is hooked up to the stock vehicle horn button in the steering wheel. It is also tied into the alarm system but can be disabled at the flip of a switch. When that alarm goes off you can hear it from damn near anywhere inside a mall!!! He just turns the train horn off if the car is parked at home so as not to kill the neighbors should it go off. Now that's a loud alarm.

I saw a simialr thing, to that. It was a smoke machine that when the alarm was set off, the interior of the car began to fill with thick, choking smoke to make the person get out of the car.

Good luck w/the alarm. Especially trying to get the external motion sensot to work. Just remember, as much as I hate to say it, not many people pay attention to alarms anymore. Even if they have custom sounds, extremely loud, annoying, etc. I must admit, I am one of those people that don't even look anymore if I hear an alarm. Only after bout 5-10 minutes when it becomes repetitive do I start getting pissed and see what's going on.
It sucks, but all too true. So many people are so damn paranoid they set sensitivity levels super high, so when the wind blows, or someone bumps their car while walking by, the damn thing goes off. Since you hear them all time, no one cares anymore.

(Maybe one of those electecution thingies like in Robocop3......lol)

Hmm, filling the car with smoke, interesting

IWANTMYRX8: I know that people tend to ignore alarms these days, out of the reasons you've mentioned but this will be different. I don't want to run out to check for my car, I want my car to defend itself - and I know nobody can stand a high-pitching sound (tweeter test sounds, 20khz or higher) - especially at a high volume.

rotarygod: I guess you are right, they have no business in my car. The way I know the US tho,... everyone can sue anyone for anything,... kinda weird, don't wanna cut my own ***** off just for being smart about my alarm :D

I wish ya all the best. While I have no doubt that whatever you come up with will stop the everyday hoodlums, just remember....Nothing, short of a 12 gauge anyway, will stop a professional. A standard factory alarm system....2-3 seconds, if that. Custom like your planning, maybe 5-7 seconds. I'm not implying you don't know what your doing or that it won't be effective. But anything can be defeated by an expert. Course, If they're that good, they are probably taking 300k + cars, and have enough income I doub't they would need to steal an 8...lol

Moral of the story : Get insurance, and a scattergun w/lots and lots of ammo :-)

LOL, maybe I should mount a shotgun under the seat and have it trigger when someone trys to sit down. Even a professional won't be checking under the seat, that's for sure :D

I know that a pro could disable it pretty quickly but your point is right, a pro is prolly after a different cars then our 8's.

Ah man,... maybe I'm just too paranoid but over here they break into cars if the familiy is at home, during the day and even while the family has their front door open! Now... that scares me!
Because of that, I don't even leave my window down if I intend to go inside for 5+ minutes... Or maybe it's because I'm in love with my car... luv her soooo much

I hear that. Miss the good ole days when you could go to sleep w/the front door unlocked and the windows opened. lol.

And it's never a bad thing to be a little paranoid, so long as they don't want to put you on medication..lol

oh yea, that's more like it!

I wouldn't want that in my car tho. Just imagine a malfunction and burning yourself, other than that, pretty cool :o

How about installing a taser under the steering wheel, aimed at the potential thief's crotch region?

that would mean he's already in my car, which I'm trying to avoid. I got already most parts of my alarm figured out, just don't have the cash to finalize it. At least not at the moment...

That would not be wise. **** happens, things malfunction, and you don't want to be driving down the road when the taser goes off accidentally. And you will be held liable for any damages if that thing goes off on someone who has legitimate reasons to be in that car (valet, mechanic, emissions tester, etc.).

When people do things like this without thinking about all of the problems that occur, they begin a bid for their very own Darwin award.

I want a thumb print scanner inside the car....so before you can start the car you have to be authorized by the thumb print scanner....we have one in our office to get into a secure part of the building....it's so cool

When I was on holiday, I read in the local newspaper about two cars were stolen form outside someones home. These cars were a Mercedes E55 AMG and a SL55 AMG, both cars deemed "unstealable" by the manufacturer. This just shows you how professional these bastards can be.
Another thing they have done is not try and start the car; just put it in a flatbed and tow it away, leaving them with almost unlimited to bypass the immobilser etc in their lock or whatever.

Its true how good these guys are these days. so for me its going to be the good ole Kalashnikov security system and common sense. I just hope its enough.

BTW has anyone seriously thought about pepper spray yet? at least you would be able to spot the guy trying to steal cars. I mean he would have to carry a gas mask at least.

When you are considering alarms, you have to realize that you won't be able to absolutely keep someone from taking the car. If a thief is good enough, and wants your car bad enough, he can get it. Even if you booby trap it, add gas, pepper spray, or the "good ole Kalashnikov security system", there is more than one way around it.

What you can do is make it harder and less attractive to theives. The less someone wants your car, and the harder you make it for them to get it or it's contents (even if they can if they work at it hard and long enough), the less likely someone will steal it or break in. They will go to an easier target.

And don't forget, something like a pain generator (loud piezo tweeters that will be painful, and will chase someone out of the car) might keep someone from taking too many items, or causing too much damage. But they've already caused damage by breaking into the car. The best thing is to have a stealth installation (and refrain from waking the neighbors with your bad-*** bass), so that you don't attract bad elements to begin with.
