My question is, how will Overloads Aux-Mod control the Ipod? What connection between the Ipod and Aux-mod will be used? Is it a USB, RCA, etc?

Becuase I would like to use this Dension dock with an FM modulator temporarily until Overloads comes out if it is an RCA connection between the Ipod and Aux-mod. Catch my drift? Thanks

Ben

We're still not completely decided about the control for the advanced unit. The cheapest and easiest way to get iPOD control connected is to hack apart a connector attached to a remote. I guess that the remotes aren't the most overused part that iPOD users have, so perhaps it would be a good sacrificial lamb to get the iPOD into your car. It's also a good way to get the audio into the car at the same time.

As to the thread being a year old. I'm surprised that it took this long. If I knew that developing this module would have taken so much time and effort in the first place, I probably wouldn't have started, but we're at the point now that we've got so much momentum, that we have to finish it.

We're very close. The end of the wait is near.

The issue for me at this time is whether to buy the IPOD, now that the earphone jack on my IPAQ (PocketPC device) just broke. I assume that the IPAQ was never going to be controllable through the steering column absent some ugly extra wiring, and finding the right PocketPC software, which I'm not up to doing myself. But if the AUXMOD isn't going to ship, or doesn't work well, or won't be available for another 12 months... it's very confusing. Plus, I really hate having to shuttle everything through ITunes, not having an SD expansion slot and not being able to change the battery easily on the IPOD, even if everyone loves the IPOD and ITunes, but I digress.

Also, another issue for me revolves around satellite radio. Is AUXMOD a good solution for those of us who want "wired" SIRIUS radio in a 2004 RX8? I need someone to talk S-L-O-W-L-Y if he or she is willing to tackle my question. (I'm not really a techie, I just pretend on occassion.) Can I just buy a "Roadie" or whatever SIRIUS is calling its latest radio and plug it into the AUXMOD?

Hi again MEGAREDS!,

I think that the Roady is an XM radio product, a competitor to Sirius. They are the two dominant satalite radio providers.

If your unit comes with RCA plugs, or a Mini headphone jack, be it a CD player, Walkman, MD player, MD player, MP3 player, or whatever else there is out there, and it has analogue output (You can plug headphones into it and hear something), It will work perfectly well with the AuxMod basic unit.

The Basic unit was redesigned to get it out, and soon, so we stripped off all the upgradability, and special enhancements to the hardware that would take us more time to test and develop it, and shrinked it down to what the majority of what people have been asking for: A simple audio line in.

The basic unit is no longer upgradable, or capable of remotely controlling an iPOD, or an Archos, or a PC, but it will accomplish the task that some have called simple, of getting a very clean audio signal into your Mazda head unit. If you just want to hear the sound better, or at all, the AuxMod basic is for you.

We are still going to deliver the Advanced unit, which will allow you to connect to a varity of audio sources to control the playback (play/pause/trackup/trackdown).

I've been pretty busy lately, and obviously, I can't get much done when I'm online, and I don't want to neglect the focum too much since I know how any people look to it for updates, but this has been pretty much my entire life outside of work for the last year, and I'll will be personally very satisfied when we're done with the development!

Regards,

Not to be a pr*ck or anything, but shouldn't this discussion here be in its own thread? Its bad enough to run over here every time there's a post and have it be some off-topic BS, but when its something the majority of readers can't even understand...

Well, I just installed the unit (I was the first on the list) and let me say- buy this thing. Its very easy to install (if you are familiar with taking the head unit out), sound quality is excellent, and I dont believe you have to upgrade the head unit code to use it.

I have an early RX8, so I upgraded my head unit code anyway so I could use the PIE Adapter for XM Radio, and I use this unit for my IPOD. If I had to choose one unit, I would choose this unit- its cheaper, easier to install (the cable is too short on the PIE adapter) and the sound quality is the same- at least to my ears.

For those who have tried the soldering- thing with the cassette unit or the head unit, dont waste your time- use this thing.

If I'm on the list should I have been getting e-mails? I sent Overload a PM and he said I'd go on the e-mail list, but I haven't heard anything that way. Just making sure I'm on there somewhere!

For radio removal instructions, check this out:
http://www.whatsmyip.org/ipodrx8/
From what I've heard, once you have the radio in hand, the adapter just plugs right into the back of the radio.

Its true-

instructions on removing the head unit are found everywhere- for those who solder in leads to the cassette player or those who use pie.

Once the head unit is removed, you simply snap the adapter in the open plug on the bottom of the unit- where the cassette/minidisk unit usually go- and plug a headphone cable into the adapter. Snake the cable to the central armrest area, where you would plug it into your ipod/ or for xm, plug it into the xm unit.

To use, just press the cassette button and you get incredible sound, without having to use a blank cassette or solder, or pay $200.

Note, of course, with this unit you cannot use the cassette player or minidisk player- if you have either of these, you have to remove them to use this unit.

A small note,

We're not in production yet. We did a small batch of prototype units for testing for the people on the top of the list to test out/use. We're confident that it will work pretty well, some hence people actual have early units.

Attached is a picture which shows what the unit looks like once it has been installed in the back of the HU.

If you've emailed me, I've got you on the list. I may not have replied to everyone, but if you didn't get a non-delivery report (my email gets jacked sometimes), then most likely, I got your message and you are on the list. If you didn't hear from me, send me a PM here.

Regards,

OverLOAD
