I can't wait to have mine, too. Hope my name is not too far in the list. Can the car steering wheel be used for changing tunes (with an ipod) ? just wondering, even tho it's not THAT important.. just a cool feature..
Would anyone have a link for removal instructions of the radio on a Mazda6?
Thanks

there's plenty of instructions on www.mazda6tech.com and www.mazda6club.com and there's even a video of the process

The pre-production units are going through their paces and people have reported no problems at this point. We're getting ready for production, which is coming up soon.
I've been digging into the AuxMod Advanced setup again and it seems to be very close to where we need it... probably just a couple more months for that. Basic is still the first priority at the moment.

Hi OverLOAD,
I have an idea for the advanced AuxMod, or maybe a future upgrade option to it.
With the pervasiveness of these USB thumbdrives, why not just add a USB port to the AuxMod Advanced, with the necessary code to read and play mp3 files right off an attached thumbdrive. The user could just run a USB extension cable and mount the USB jack anywhere they want in the car.
For user consistency, the code in the AuxMod could treat the stored audio files/folders in the thumbdrive the same way that the current MP3 player treats the files on an MP3 CD.
And the code could emulate (appear as) a cassette player to the head unit, so that all the controls could be used the same way.

That would be kind of like turning USB drives into MP3 players. But I think MP3 players are far more common than thumb drives? And besides, so much music these days is DRM'd anyway, that doesn't seem like a very viable idea. Unless the thumb drive is an iPod Shuffle.... then it would work no problem :-)

well.. i actually would like that.. shoot.. my dad just bought me a 1gb thumbdrive and it kicks ***.. ifi could hookthat up too.. shoot i would love it. but then again.. i do have an iPOD.. but i forgot about the advanced AUX mod.. was it where u plugged in the bottom port of the iPOD into the aux mod?? i forgot..

Very Possible, but it seems like a waste to me. There is already an in-dash MP3 player from the factory that works perfectly. No need to duplicate work in this case, IMO.

For this kind of development, you probably are just better off buying a mini USB mp3 player.
The only down side, is that there aren't any standalone systems that can both contol a USB thumb drive, and play mp3s, except maybe a PC.
USB host mode isn't easy to do, and each USB drive often has its own specific driver. Given most of them are embedded into windows so you don't need to install it, it's still a faily massive amount of work to develop a standalone USB host adapter and mp3 player combined.
The standalone player with flash memory is just more portable. With the inexpensive devices out there like the RCA player, that has 128MB flash built in and support SD cards for neat $50, I couldn't even come close to competing. It's a good idea for a product. It seems like someone out there could do it.

Oh no - UK interest now!
Hello
I am collecting my new 2005 RX8 on the 1st of March.
Days have been spent scanning and calling the entire UK for a solution for connecting my aux feed from my MP3 player... I was told it was impossible.
I should have known you guys would be ahead of us brits....
Add me to the list of people who want one of your aux in units... please!
I realise there will be postage etc.. but all the same, its better than the arcing/smoking, shorted out cassette player hack option.
(I am gonna keep this aux in secret to myself in the UK)
Many thanks, Steve

Hi OverLOAD.
Has the testing phase brought any problem so far? How far are you from beginning the "massive" production? My iPOD's used for everything but mp3s these days... that's where you help!![Smilie](https://www.rx8club.com/images/smilies/smile.gif)
If you have a spare beta aux-mod, my checking book's is ready

Thanks,

Hi Krass,
We're in the process of building small batches of the production modules at the moment. It's going pretty quickly and we're going to be offering some units to the earliest waitlisted people very soon.
We still do have issues with getting enough of the Head unit connectors to build up enough boards to satisfy everone. The distributor that we had counted on getting the bulk of the units from only had a little more than a dozen units available, and is quoting us 4 to 6 month lead time on more parts! We've investigated other possible sources for the connectors and we're hoping that we can negotiate something. I've got an informal agreement to get more parts, but it may also be in pretty limited quantities. If it comes down to ordering with the 4-6 month delay, we will still manage, although with a rediculous turnaround time on our build up process.
The prototype testing went very well for the most part. Everyone that I heard back from managed to install their modules without any problems. Feedback was very good. The install procedure is pretty similar to the tape module install, so that worked well.
To be perfectly open with everyone, I heard back from one person who said that his head unit had simply 'stopped working' no lights, no sound, no LCD display. I've tried to contact him several times to help him out. I don't think it's AuxMod related however, as a loose main harness, or damage to the connector/harness during the install could have caused this possiblity too. It may be as simple as reinstalling the HU and getting the connectors clicked in. It's undiagnosed at this point.
But on a brighter note, some people high up on the list should be seeing some messages soon.

Figures that the same day I get around to sending a request to be put on the waiting list is the same day that you start production, heh. I sent you a private message to be added to the list.
May I be the first to post a congratulations on coming this far. I have been following the progress of this project for the last several months and I'm very excited about getting my hands on one of these units. My 2005 Mazda 6 can't wait either!

For Protege & Protege5?
Hey overLOAD,
I saw that you posted on msprotege.com:
http://www.msprotege.com/forum/showt...65#post1517865
Does this mean that your product should be just plug and play in the last generation of Proteges? Have you tested it in those cars? If you haven't, I'd be interested in trying it for you, just let me know...
Thanks for any help you can offer!
Cheers.

Hi Blizzard,
It should work in just about any 2002+ Mazda. Maybe even a few earlier than that too. We're looking for testers for different vehicles, especially in the Metro Detroit area.
We've tested the Mazda6 & RX-8 all years, models and trims successfully, and expect the Mazda3 to follow suit. The Tribute & MPV should be ok also. Miata's from ~2001+ may be on the good list too. Protege's are also on the suspected compatible list.
While we didn't specifically design with these other vehicles to test, we implemented a simulation of the Mazda facotory Tape module, which is used in each of these vehicles with just a slightly different front cover. It should be just plug and play. The idea is to solve the Aux-In issue for everyone with one product. The only model in question still, is the B-series trucks, since to the best of my knowledge, they have used a slightly different radio.
Regards,
Eric

Got mine and installed it yesterday evening. Took me about an hour and fifteen minutes (first time for full stereo removal). The thing works great! At first, I put it all together and it sounded pretty funky (hooked up to my XM), so I played around a bit and discovered all my HU settings were gone, so I was hearing the crap-a$$ audiopilot and zero treble and bass. Upon correction of the problem, it sounds great and was a quickie to install!
