custom fiberglass

how much is too much for a custom fiberglass box for a 12" sub box. One for each side of the trunk.

the guy quoted approx. 400 for each side; i dont think this could be right, but im not sure.

i wanna have some kind of base so i can talk some **** to the guy without being unreasonable.

I'm looking for the same thing, but for 10" speakers on each side.
The only quote I have received so far was for $600 (total for both).
$600 seemed like a lot to me, especially since I told him it doesn't need to be finished, I just need the shape. I said I could sand it and paint it.
I'm waiting for a phone call from a local guy that I was referred to, hopefully it's cheaper.
If it cost that much, I may just try to make one myself. I've been looking for a detailed DIY on fiberglass boxes. I might use Bob the Eskimo's DIY found here

The materials are not that expensive. You're mostly paying for the labor.
After I get another quote, I'll post it on here.
If anyone has any other suggestions, please let us know.

since I come from owning and working in multiple custom stereo shops $600 is not bad at all for both sides...if you've never laid fiberglass before you don't know the tediousness of the process...it's not hard...it's just a PITA to work with..and the crap gets EVERYWHERE...

Yeah, it really depends on what you want, and the quality of both the work and materials. And you have to consider what you're asking for. Price for something like that is normally determined on an hourly basis, so putting together something that fits snugly in the nooks and crannies of a corner will cost more than something like a simple footwell box or kickpanel. It seems obvious, but just keep that in mind that when you ask a general question like that, people will have paid different prices for different boxes.

That being said, for the general information you've given, $400 per side doesn't sound like a rip-off. If you have the opportunity, I suggest that you go see a few shops and get prices (hopefully, there's more than one available to you). Make sure that you clearly explain to each of them what you want, so that you are comparing prices for the same thing. It's pretty easy for one shop to be talking about a simpler box that isn't finished as well, while another could be talking about one that could take more work.

Just an FYI, my design originally called for a 13" sub on the side, then we determined that wouldn't fit, so we dropped ot 12" only to find out that wouldn't fit in a box either. The end result is a 10" sub. Sorry to say, but that's all that will fit in the rear coners...check it out:

13inch...JL Audio's 13W7...its their new 'bad boy' on the block...AWESOME sub!

I JUST talked to my local install shop for an estimate for fiberglass. I'm wanting to do the same thing with two 10's in the corners with seperate pod like fiberglass enclosures. it would be primed for paint, but not finished (they don't paint) and guesstimated about $600 for parts/labor and all. that's for the enclosures, any of the materials and what not, and to hook up two amps along with a false floor w/plexiglass to mount them. I'm going to keep my stock Bose speakers in the car, but am going to run an aftermarket amp on them. Reason being so i can use the high pass filter on the amp for the inside speakers, and to improve sound quality and level. The subs are already bought...JL Audio 10W3 V2. Not sure when I'll be doing the install. Need to buy the amps, have NOPI Nationals to get to in Sept, and want to get the Canzoomer Piggy Back ECU. Not sure what order i'm going to get the parts, so we'll see on time. But...$500-600 should be the going rate, depending on u'r box design though. its up to u if u want to keep it simple or get crazy with the cheese wiz.
