I was planning on adding a rotary logo in my door panel with my leather thats being installed; however Mazda is not allowing it to happen because of trademark copyrights. With that said I'm trying to come up with my own design, should I put my initials with a logo in the door? I'm worried about resale of my car though. Anybody got any logo ideas?

 

just rotate the logo 270 degrees and there you go- it is legal!

 

What? Did you call Mazda for permission? If the installer is not willing to do it then that’s another story. Otherwise, I would do it… You can always add a label out of the way saying “*Third-party trademarks are the property of their respective owners.” That will cover you legally but I really doubt Mazda would take any action anyway unless you were selling the door panels for profit.

A trademark is something that marks and identifies a product/service/company and it is not copyrighted ((R) symbol is official registered and TM is not). If you use a trademark to mislead the symbol, like putting a rotary symbol on a honda civic, then it would be illegal and Mazda might be tempted to send a threatening letter. But if you put it on a rx8, it clearly shows that the rotary TM belongs to mazda and you are not misleading the symbol.

Your rx8 is from Mazda, the rotary symbol is from Mazda, you put a Mazda symbol on a Mazda product. Do you really think Mazda will spend thousands of dollar trying to get a lawyer write a letter for you to get rid of something that makes their mark stronger?

 

Well--the thing is--I'm getting it done via the dealership--they offered the best price--and its Katzkin leather. They told me I could go with this other installer that has lesser quality leather but could do it, 'on the sly', but I'd rather the higher grade of leather. So that's the issue--since its via dealership, my hands are tied. I told them I'd come up with some ideas and bring it to them on Monday, when I drop the car off.

 

Call MAZDA! as soon as you can...maybe you can get a pass from them for the dealership...especially if you take pics and give it to mazda...maybe they will even sponsor it...WORK THE PHONE LINES
