Dash Kit $20
haha don't get too excited yet, but I just got back from Circuit City (gross) and saw if they had the Corksport dash kit as opposed to buying it online, they don't carry it, but they had another option available for special order, a dash kit for '04 RX8 for 17.99, it didn't even have a picture but the employee said his friend has the same product for an RSX and it looks and works well. For $20, I ordered it, and will get it in 7 days, I'll let you guys know what the deal is.
My outlook is far from optimistic.
ps he went to some website, i thought he said metroonline.com, but thats not it, ill see if its on the receipt or anything and try to post the site

metraonline is the site.
it's a very slow site and it seems that sometimes it doesn't really work, however i was looking over the employees shoulder while he was on there and he did locate the kit for the 04 model
i also asked him about the AC controls because of all of the complications i read with the corksport, he said it didn't impact his friend's RSX.
do NOT get excited

dude, go get your money back before the kit even comes in. it is a pocket designed for mazda vehicles with double din openings, so that you can put a regular radio in and then put the pocket in below or above it so you dont have a hole in the dash. i work for an independent car audio retailer as both a sales person and installer, with over 8 years experience in the industry, going back to 1997. as soon as metra releases a kit for the 8 (if they ever get around to it) i will probably be one of the first to get one. and i will make damned sure that everyone on here is aware of it. i speak with the guys over there about once a month trying to kick them in the butt and get them to make a kit for us. i do know that they have a full rx8 dash sitting in one of their warehouses waiting to be used to prototype the kit, but there isnt enough demand in general for them to get started. maybe if we all start calling them and pestering them, maybe they will do something
oh, by the way, heres a link to the instructions for the kit you ordered

lurch,
I go to University of Delaware, I live close by.
With over 8 years of experience and being an RX8 owner, you sound like someone who I'd like to handle my car for an install. Where are you located?

Ok, seriously everyone call Metra. This is a great car that deserves better than the poor OEM that Mazda decided to use. Speaking of which let Mazda and any other car company that you are considering purchasing a new vehicle from know that it is not cool to try to exclude the aftermarket.
Yes on a BMW or Mercedes the whole cars are now tied together with computer systems. That I can almost understand, but still don't like.
On RX8s, Mazda 6, G35s it is just the car maker trying to make sure more of your hard earned money goes to them. I see no benefit to how the 8's dash is designed. The display on top is an ok idea. Theoretically you can keep your eyes on the road more. But the only things it shows are time, radio channel, the position of the AC/Heat vents, and temperature of outside. Nothing I really bother with while I am driving. Yes I need to know station, but everyone uses presets anyway. I have no problem reading the display on my alpine which is 3 or 4" lower.
The stock radio has no RDS, the navi is dvd based, the "best" sound is the bose. You can do so much better in the aftermarket than this. Get only what you want, not limited by what Mazda choose to offer. Spend what you can afford and upgrade down the road.
Love my RX8, but Mazda you really should know stock is not good enough for long in any part of these cars. Especially the audio system.
