This is crap because i am continually disappointed with my car and with Mazda motors. If the 8 didn't look so dang good, i would probably sell the thing. First, i buy a car that is supposed to have 238 hp, and find out that it doesn't, and then find out that it gets 16mpg when i should be getting about 20mpg. I really like my car, and i am not about to get a different car, but i just have been really disappointed with the power. For 16mpg, i want to sqirm in my seat when i push the gas, a vet gets 20mpg with 400hp !!!

sorry i needed to vent :D
I won't get started on the whining about horsepower and mileage... there are enough threads about that.

As for the DVD, yeah it sucks, but there's nothing in the warranty about continual updates for the DVD data. It's no different than buying a computer with Windows XP Home, and a year later Windows XP Media Center is released... do you think you're entitled to the upgrade because something better is out? No. It is an optional upgrade- you want it, you pay for it... it's not like you car needs it to run. If you felt the 2002 data was unacceptable as part of the purchase price, you should have negotiated that $200 upgrade disc into the price of the vehicle.

Any updates from Navteq if they are ready to release the upgraded DVDs?

At least Matt at Mazdaparts.com will update our head units and nav units with the latest firmware. All we need after that is the new disc.

I just called NavTech today and was told Mazda is still the holdup. I inquired about the firmware update for the head unit and was told that it would be included on the disk with the updated map data when it is released.

I called Mazda and spoke with a rep that told me the expected release date is June 2005. I pressed him for contact information to be able to speak with someone higher up the chain... but was told he had talked directly with Tech Support and the information they have was for a June release. He also confirmed there would be a firmware update on the disk.

Exclamation

I just called the Navteq number and got the run-around. I was put on hold twice for a total of 20 minutes and shuffled between 3 different people (departments?).

Anyhow, the last guy I spoke with said "we've already been asked about this, and a decision hasn't been made". Oh really. Funny. He just wanted to get rid of me.

I recommend its time for all interested forum members to start calling. Squeaky wheels get grease. Just my thoughts,

Jeff

What you guys dont seem to understand is that they dont consider us the customer. Calls should be made to Mazda, not Navteq. I have called every week, and they always tell me it will be released by the end of the month... and a year later... still no map disc. I bought my RX-8 in the summer of 2003, with a 2002 map disc, which is in my opinion, acceptable. Those of you who bought a 2005, you should be pissed as hell! Mazda has the ability to put some heat on Navteq, but as usual, the only good to come from Mazda is the car itself. Once you have signed the papers, its sorry bout your luck!

Keep calling them! I just called Navtech...they say mazda is the problem. I called mazda...they say navtech. She put me on hold...came back saying yes, navtech is sending everybody to mazda...but the up dates will be read end of June...where have I heard "2 months" before on this issue??? Yep...everytime I've asked.

So...call them. Bug them. let them know we are getting pissed.

Oh, I am defiantly in on this one.

If I’m feeling too calm I just need to push the open button on my dash and my blood pressure doubles. I have got to the point where I won’t even use it any more. I’ve also got the runaround from Mazda to Navteq and back to Mazda.

Does anybody have a telephone number and contact information for a person that has seemed effective at either place?

And for all of you who say you should have tried it before you bought it, no. It’s just not possible unless you take the car out for a day and most dealers don’t want you to rack up 100+ miles on a car that they don’t sell many of. Blah Blah Blah, I know.

Phone number for Mazda I used was 1-800-222-5500

Used the phone number listed earlier in this thread for Navteq

You know the reall sucky thing about this? I love the nav system! I'll never have another car without one. But, I might just go 3rd party next time and definatly not Mazda.

Anyone know the fax number?
Email address?

We've all heard of "group buys" on this forum, so how about a "group fax", or "group e-mail", where during a certain period of days everyone in the "group" sends an email, letter, or fax to Mazda and Navteq.

Just an idea. Who wants to organize it? We need a coordinated action.

I just purchased a new 2004 RX-8. Very good deal, it has the navigation system. The dealer could not locate the nav disk for it so they said I will be receiving a new 2005 disk in it's place. From the sounds of this thread doesn't sound as if it will be coming any time soon. So I have no navigation system at all.

Jailibrand, the "new" disk has been coming out "in 6-8 weeks" for over a year now.

I'd make sure your dealer provides you with a loaner old disk. Cause without it, your nav system is junk.

JMHO,
Bob

Maybe you could find the old DVD in a totaled RX-8. You might be able to figure out where one is by looking through this site. Of course, the nav with NO dvd works just about as good as it does with the old one IMO.

My calls and emails are going in today. Hopefully the logic is improved as well as having new roads. I've seen several instances where the nav calculates a circuitous route (3 rights to make a left). Perhaps that's because the old map has a 'no left turn' in it, but it seems that the logic works about 95% - 98% of the time.

I've had it do the 3 rights to take a left too, taking you about a mile out of your way. This is on roads that I grew up with so they have been just as they are for 30+ years. I have yet to find a route that it can provide full guidance on. The trouble is that this is neither horseshoes nor handgranades. If a river lies between me and my destination no amount of traction control is going to get me to the other side.

Don't worry, the new disk is comming out in 6-8 weeks.

rXter,

I've learned to not blindly follow the instructions either because of stuff like you say.

I do think that most of the time it is because there didnt used to be a left turn allowed.

But, wouldnt it be great if they updated the software also? Like give us the option to have a "ding" or something instead of that Nagging Female voice? I mean, GIVE ME A BREAK! I can have a nagging femail voice tell me where to go and how to get there anytime I want...just bring my wife along.

But what about all that trip computer type data it is gathering? Like average speed for the trip, speed while moving, gas milage, altitude, grade, etc? Why cant they show us that?

And we are starting to see what I call "real time nav". Where the NAV system gets real time traffic data and uses that to calculate the most efficient route...automaticly taking you around wreeks, jams and construciton.

Guess I could sell the car and get one that alreay offeres that sort of thing....like say a BMW 7 series? Oh yea...I can buy his and her's RX8's with money left over for a Harley for the price of a 7 series.

Has anybody started making group calls yet? I am to the point where I could make calls all day long to mazda and Navteq if it would make a difference.

I wish I would have found this thread before I just dropped a deposit on an 04 with Nav. The area I live is building like crazy so I have a feeling a good % of the streets won't show up. I will not be happy.

Sounds like we're not talking to the right or high enough people because they cannot tell us where the real bottleneck is. I'll see what I can dig up for contact info.

Here is an interesting thread.
https://www.rx8club.com/west-rx-8-forum-34/attn-rx8-owners-navigation-system-54764/
Samsonite1 says that his Aviator disk got updated and it works in his 8. He also said it only cost him 40$.
Anyone try buying it?
