I was actually thinking that it would be cool to be able to make a modification to the outside-temp display that shows direction if you push the 'AMB' button a few times. As soon as someone tells me where I can get the schematics of that top head display unit, I can't see how it would be all that difficult. Nice geek project.

I've seen a clip on LCD compass for rear view mirrors at TARGET. Tried looking it up online, but couldn't find it.
Basically, it clips around the mirror, with a tiny, transparent plastic/LCD readout on the front on the mirror. Not sure what the power requirements were.
It was going for approx $29

I asked a friend to look for a "cool" one in Japan. He said the GPS is pretty common in Japan, therefore digital compass is "outdated". That's pretty sad, why are we always the last one to get the latest gadgets? I thought we're the super power of the world. Hey Bush, why don't you add Japan to your axis of evil list.
Well, no need to look for an outdated product. So i'm considering the iQue 3600, a Palm PDA/NAV system under $600.

That circular button hole that you pointed out looks to me to be one of two possible things:
1. possible Air-bag off switch location? factory designed but not implemented?
2. Extra AUX power plug? You can never have enough power plugs.. esp, for passengers with accessories..

Hm, that plug you circled can be easily removed if it's not already occupied by the light/switch people mentioned. I was able to pull it out while I was driving with my fingers. Behind it is just empty space, but I imagine with a few simple tools, you could install an arm there for your iPod/PDA/etc and not worry about having to cut into your dash. I'll probably try this some day.
