Which direction should the sub point?
This weekend I am going to build a custom box for two 10's. I have notice in my last car the if the sub was faced forward it made cleaner bass, however, less of it. When faced up... it made little bass and when faced back it just rattled the trunk. So my question is which direction should the sub point? If I could know before I build the box... well, it would make my life a lot easier. Thanks in advance.

I could get into all this crazy stuff about standing waves and whatnot (I am taking an Audio Engineering class right now), but the best thing is to just experiment. In my civic (which gets traded in today for my RX!) facing the trunk yields better response. Are you building a sealed or ported box? Since trunk space is tight, I would go with a sealed box which will require more power, but you will get the most accurate base response and the smallest footprint. A ported box will take more space, but require less power...you will of course lose some quality on response as well. Not sure how much you know about box building, but make sure you choose an appropriate volume to get the most our of you woofers... my 2 cents.

I am building a seal box (0.6 cubic feet each chamber) and using two Infinity Perfect 10.1 with a Polk Momo 500.1 amp. I've built a few boxes in my life time, so I should be okay in that area.

Djseto congrats again on your new 8!
During black friday deals I picked up a low end sub setup that will probably be fired backward since it is ported...also I got around a 500w amp as well
really this box will be more for show and I will set it up so it can be removed easily when I need trunk space
I'm glad you guys are discussing this even though it has been brought up before, I'll test mine in different positions and give you guys an update on how it goes
I've heard dynamat costs and arm and a leg at retail places but my friend who works at a pawn shop (shady don't ask) can get it for like $12-$15 a square foot brand new (not pawned :D stuff) if I need to resort to it I will
later

Typically you don't want the subs to face right into the seats unless they are paper thin. This is less of a concern with the RX-8 because even with the passthrough in place I would estimate that there is still a way for bass energy to get through.
Facing backwards works well; however, you do get some horn-loading (i.e. "1/8th space corner loaded") type effects by putting it in the very back corner of the trunk and shooting it sideways. https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...3&postcount=81
Overall, in my opinion the top ways to fire subs into a car are:
1. Straight into the cabin (i.e. through the pass through section): A+
2. Corner loaded (if possible): A
3. Against the rear seats firing back: A-
4. Any random placement: B
5. Firing straight into the rear seats (generally): D

ive got 1 perfect 10.1s with a 600watt jbl amp, in a box facing directly into the seats. the reason i chose this is because it saves me the most space, i built the box to the same angle as the back seats (find the plans in a thread on here, i cant remember who made them but they are great). i mounted the amp on the side of the box so its a clean looking install and no one can see the subs or amp. also i dont have to worry about the subs getting damaged from objects in the trunk, and honestly, they hit very hard. enough to make ur nostrils vibrate, which is enough for me. sometime when i have time i'll flip it around and face them back to see if they sounds better or worse.
