DVD player mounted under radio...sucess!

Okay...im working on adding a dvd player to my car. I wanted something stock looking and easy to get to so i came up with this...

Lots of cutting and grinding...took me about 1 hour to get this far. It looks almost stock. Best part i was able to keep the ashtray but had to cut off about an inch off the lid. Work in progress...got to mount the drive in the bay and get it wired. I'm done for today and probably finish it up this weekend. Best part is...theres no gaps and didnt have to fill in any spaces. Waiting on the Aveletronics unit to come in and adapter. After this i will be mounting lcd visors and lcds on the back of the seats or possibly on the back doors.

Are you planning on using the NAV for the screen?

What all inside did you have to cut inside other than the ash tray assembly to make that fit?

I used a dremel with the grinder attachment. The cutter tend to want to jump. I masked the area not to be cut with tape, which was right even with the hinge mount. After i was done grinding believe it or not i wet the sidewalk and used it as a wet stone. Make sure you use a smooth sidewalk. It made it perfectly smooth, flush and even.

The DVD player has in/output jacks on front and in/output rca jacks in back. Plays pretty much every format...dvd's, dvdr's, mp3's, vcd's, divx. Also if anyone want to do this you must buy a 1/2 din dvd player. This is not a full din. Has anti skip mech too with remote.

DDJFLW you did a great job. So when you install those additional LCD displays you mentioned, I guess you are planning on simply using the extra outputs of your DVD player to connect to the inputs on the other LCDs, right? Or are you thinking of buying the more expensive version of the avelectronic unit?

Wow...talk about an all day job. Finally got it all finished and came out better than expected. Talk about a factory looking job! I redid the mounting on the dvd player so it sits back more flush. Also installed a toggle switch so it goes between DVD mode and the GPS mode. The switch i used had a LED light so this kinda made it a task to use since the output of the switch is positive and the remote wire to the AVNAV is negative. I couldnt reverse the wiring because the LED on the switch isnt backward compatible. So i had to install a $5 relay. I took several breaks during the day so i want to say i've spent atleast 9 hours on it. Biggest part was trying to figure out how to wire the relay correctly without blowing things up. Heres some pictures...

The finished product...

Toggle switch...switches between GPS screen and DVD screen...

The relay i installed...

Watching a movie...

Heres a shot of what i cut out to fit the DVD player...

This is where i mounted the P.I.E adapter...

Picture after mounting the DVD player...

Another angle of DVD player mounting...

Picture of what i cut off of the ashtray lid...

Picture of what i cut off the ashtray itself...

Good picture of everything i cut out of the dash...

Here's the video in action...

Exactly that. The DVD player has 2 sets of video out. I've decided to mount them on the back of the seats and possibly get LCD visors. Thats a project down the road.

Also if anyone in my area wants this mod...just look me up and i'll help ya out.

That is awsome. I have NAV in my car and would like to do something like this, but don't know how the nav/audio system works. Exactly how is the audio/video outputs on the dvd player hooked to the RX-8s system?

I know you just completed your task and want to enjoy it, but could you give the rest of us more insight on your project.

Could you list the parts, electronics, & cost of each needed to do this?
Such as the model number for the PIE adapter, the DVD player, how and ecactly what you spliced the toggle switch into to get it to work.

I'm not too concered about the cutting and fitting of the DVD player where you have it mounted, as I would probably mount it in the glovebox...I'm most interested in the toggle switch.

It would be much appreciated!!

I think I found your DVD player --------> PYLE PLDVD115 (PLDVD-115 )

http://cgi.ebay.com/NEW-2007-PYLE-IN...QQcmdZViewItem

Although this one looks sweet, it has an SD slot and a USB input.....wonder if I could use my 80gb Western Digital pocket hard drive and it read the folder structer properly instead of the other options currently available.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...link:middle:us

Could you look at the second url for the DVD specs and see if it is similar to the Pyle one you used so that I could use your process and end up with the same results.

I actually bought the nav/dvd kit from a member on this forumn used. Its made by AVELECTRONIC. There's several threads on this forumn about this product and even a how to install it. If you buy it new it should come with instructions on what to cut, splice or whatever. That toggle switch isnt rocket science...if you use a basic switch you wont need a relay. I had to use a relay because i had an LED switch. The AVNav box has an ebrake saftey feature...instead of hooking it up to the ebrake, most hook it up to a switch so they can watch DVD's while driving. What i've done isnt new on this forum. Only reason i made this thread because i believe im the only one that figured out a way to put a DVD player up front in the ashtray area without completely taking out the ashtray itself. Hell i might be the only one that has a dvd player in that spot period. I was sitting in my car trying to figure out a place to put the DVD player up front. Thought about the glove box but i wanted a more accessible place. I dont know any model numbers or prices on the stuff except the DVD player which was already listed beecause i bought most of it from a member selling his old setup. I know theres vendors on this forum that sell them.
