Exhaust noise suppression with insulation?

This weekend we took a trip (about 5 hours total) in the RX-8. On the way back, when I was tired and just wanted a relaxing drive, the exhaust drone at 65 - 75 got on my nerves so bad...... it was this constant wwwwooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo that nearly drove me batshit. It seemed to be strictly exhaust noise, coming from the rear of the car, so I was wondering how possible it would be to 'tune' that with dynamat or other insulation.

I know a few people here have done a lot of dynamat (or equivalent) on their 8's, so can you tell me what the effect has been on exhaust noise?

my car has pretty complete "dynamat" job...

Pretty much everything but the hood and roof were done - doors, trunk, floorplan. My friend did it for me (I lack the mechanical skills, but can help him with his computer). He took out the seats, carpeting, door panels, trunk liner, etc, and got everything back to bare metal. Added maybe 60 to 80 pounds of soundproofing material. He had two kinds, the regular "dynamat" material and 1/8 inch thick ensolite (black).

The result is a _lot_ less noise. The car is just much quieter, with much less tire noise. I cannot say that I remember how it affects the exaust, only I assume it cuts back on that noise considerably. It does not affect the engine noise much, as he did the floor pan, which goes up the fire wall a bit, but did not do the entire firewall. (I think you would have to take out the dash to do this.) The bottom line is that it is a really big improvement in this car.

Techncially, he didn't use dynamat, he used Peel-and-Seal, which is used on roofs for housing. According to knowledgeable car stereo folks on the internet, it is as good or better than dynamat extreme, for _much_ less money.
