fuse size?

Not sure if this has been asked, but I have read about some people having trouble with this.

I want to hardwire my valentine to the car using this DIY:

https://www.rx8club.com/showpost.php...0&postcount=73

The problem is you need a thing called an add-a-line or add-a-circuit, the name varies.

I know these come in different sizes, so I am wondering what size I am going to need? (oh and it is the 3rd fuse down, the A/C one if that makes a difference)

I have installed my V-1 with the add-a-fuse.

You will want the ATM MINI size.

I have it installed in Position 1 (Cigar lighter) in the kick panel fuse box. This is a switched circuit.

The add-a-fuses come with a selection of fuse sizes for the extra circuit (use the existing one for the 10a Cigar circuit) - but you will probably want to buy a 1a fuse for the radar. (unless you are using the V1 box which is fused as I recall).

There is a bright bolt that you can use for the ground under the plastic panel just above the fuse box.

Note that you can use regular telephone wire from the dollar store (10') for the run up the "a" pillar and under the front of the headliner. When not in use, you can wedge the end of the cord plug just under the headliner - nothing is visible.

(make sure you keep a tissue handy to clean the windshield every time you remove the detector. Thieving rat bastards look for suction cup marks...)

Good luck.

Jedi.

IMHO, this is a better DIY than the homelink / map light install. It is quicker and easier to install and remove in the future as no OEM wires are cut. It is also easier if you want to use the V1 Concealed Display, as the connector is below the dash. This is just my 2c, YMMV.

I don't . Otherwise I would have wired it up there.

Where did you buy it? is there any way you can put up a URL? I ask because there aren't many auto parts stores around here so I will order it online. So, I want to get it right. Returning online stuff is always a hassle :/

Where are you located? (City, Country?).

I recall I bought mine from Canadian Tire (lol) - about CDN$12?

I just searched GOOGLE - Amazon.com has them for $10.11 US. Here's a link; http://www.amazon.com/Bussmann-BP-HH.../dp/B000GKEXK2

You can just use the actual plug that comes with the valentine 1, In the lighter plug adapter you can solder 2 wires to the positive and the negative (This way its also fused because of the fuse in the plug itself.

Then just run the wires to the ignition wires under your steering column so that it comes on and off with the car. I do it on a daily basis. Works well, and never had anyone complain about it at all!

//Edit
Or if you don't want to do that soldering, just get a lighter plug adapter at pretty much any electronics store (Best buy, Circuitcity, radioshack, etc.).. Wire it to a switched accessory, and a ground so. Plug the lighter plug into it, and hide the wires. Done and done.

Well if you say that is the right size and everything that should work out perfectly.

I do have a question though.
By looking at the fuse box, it seems that if you were to put this in for one of the fuses, the little door would not shut. Is this the case?

I don't quite understand what you are saying. You suggest that I can wire it directly to the existing fuse? or use the cigarette lighter?

I have a feeling I am misunderstanding you, but the purpose for me is so hide all wires, make it look like it is part of the car.

My edit will be the easiest way...

http://www.amazon.com/Parts-Express-...=pd_sim_auto_2
There's that, wire it to power (Switched accessory, I usually do ignition), and a ground, hide the wires running up to the Valentine one and plug in the valentine plug into the newly purchased adapter.

This way it'll turn on and off with the vechile, and its already fused. (Because of the fuse in the lighter plug already)

I think your way is the same as the way I was going to do it? only, I just wouldn't use that cigarette lighter thing. I am not sure exactly what you mean, but the way the DIY says is that it still turns on with the car, and you just wire it into the fuse box up the a-pillar and to the dash. I guess i don't see the advantage in your way?

I'm sorry for giving you the run around and making ya think twice lol.

I didn't even read the DIY, and didn't notice that you had the hardwire kit. My way was basically avoiding spending the $50 on the hardwire kit, and instead spending $3 for the lighter plug adapter.

They both work the same way, except I -always- avoid the fusebox. Further complications can arise with adding fuses and what not so I always use the ignition harness, continuous 12v when the vehicle is on and it avoids the fusebox!

But since you have the hardwire kit then its very very simple, power and ground.
- Ground anywhere on the chassis
- Power / Any switched accessory (Turns on power with the vehicle, MAP / Radio / AMP fuses in the rx8)

Is there a DIY on how to do that?

I don't think so. Although the wire color for the 09 ignition is blue / Green, and its located on the steering column when the bottom shield is removed. (should be 2 bolts and 2 clips to remove it) And then just ground to anyplace on the chassis.

So you splice the ignition wire and put that thing on? but then you have to use the coiled valentine cable?

The hardwire kit for the V1, is it the one with just 2 wires coming from it? Power and ground? Or did you get the kit with the optional display with the 4 wire kit?

Since I see that your going off of the DIY that's posted in the first post then I would expect that the hardwire kit only has the 2 wires. There is something that looks like a phone cable that plugs into the v1, and then there is the coiled cable. The one that looks like a phone cable will be the run that you run into your headliner and then down into the apillar / weather stripping depending on how you need / want it to look.

The 2 wires coming out of the phone cable looking thing are power and ground, so whichever one is power can be:
1) Spliced into the ignition harness (Harder, but won't cause problems in the future)
2) Run to the fusebox (Easier, but can cause problems if a fuse doesn't pop)

And then the ground wire can be connected to the chassis anywhere you choose.

uh i have just the v1. It comes with the little blue splice thing and some wires with different connections, the horseshoe one and the circle one. I don't actually have it yet, but it should be here in the next few days. My brother just got one and so I know it comes with the stuff needed for hard-wiring.

I think I am just going to do the fuse thing because there is a good DIY

Not a bad idea. I just picked up a Beltronics GX65, and I'm going to be hardwiring it into the RX8, I'll take some pictures, and show a couple different ways to do it.

But if you like that guide then I say power to ya! Go for it ^^
