Hacking the NAV

Hacking the NAV
I want to add an AUX in to the NAV to allow me to hook up dvd players, ipods, etc and view it on screen. I've been lurking around the forums for a while gathering information on how to do this and the only options available up till now are pretty expensive. This hasn't been tackled in a while so I think I'll give it a shot. I believe I've gathered enough information to get this going again.
BTW....I actually own a 3 but it seems like more RX8 owners have a NAV than 3 owners.
Here's what I know so far.
In japan they have a TV tuner unit and a backup camera available for the Navigation system.
Here's the wiring diagram for the TV tuner. As you can see, the tuner connects to the LCD unit and the stereo.
I think this is how the tuner is hooked up.
According to the wiring diagram I have here, it is consistent with the japanese manual. This connector is located on the LCD unit.
As you can see, there is a video input (1H) and a rear cam input(1M). I believe we have two paths to input video.
To input into the rear camera input I think would be simple. All I have to do is trigger the reverse signal in pin 1T and use pin 1M to input. I am going to attempt it this weekend. This opens up possiblities to directly wire in a rear camera.
To input to the Video input is a little more difficult. You would have to enable the TV mode that the japanese tuner uses and possibly the parking brake switch. I have no idea on functionality of the TV tuner so if those members that do have it could chime in, it would be most helpful.
So what do you guys think? I think we got a pretty good shot at getting AUX video.

It seems to me that if you were able to come across this info..... then someone else has as well and its either blocked due to firmware restrictions or just doesnt work for reasons unknown.
Either way, we wont know til its tried, right?
I say give it a shot and see what happens. I am willing to investigate as well if I can find the time...... Id love to add a DVD player for those lovely long trips.

Hmmm..your idea just sounds like a resurrection of the material in this ancient thread.
I just wanted to highlight what thew wrote at the bottom of the page I linked you to:
Also, just for the hell of it, here is a page with pics of the JDM TV tuner working on a JDM RX-8, for those of you who have never seen what they get over there (that's right...tv tuner right in the damn trunk!).

Almost.. this is how is works ....
Nav unit --- LCD screen----LCD screen ----HU .
and For JDM cars:
Nav unit --- JDM T.V ------- LCD screen ---- HU .
The JDM t.v. intercepts the OEM DVD and switches between the inputs i.e... JDM Backup camera , JDM T.V. or Map DVD.
the T.V unit does not plug into the OEM DVD"Nav unit" the Nav unit goes to the JDM t.v. box and then it goes right to the HU. Per Mazda Japan... Nothing else beside the Toll booth counter plugs into the OEM DVD Nav unit.
We all know the HU controls the LCD because of the JDM t.v. screen we get with the Pie interface. ..... the HU senses continuity somewhere in the wiring harness that comes from the Nav. so your not going to find a bunch of wires coming from the Nav to the HU with Video and Audio.. its just sensing continuity and then allowing the LCD screen to switch.
