Headunit Back Lights
Is this a common problem?

CD changer buttons 2 and 3 aren't lighting up and it's bugging the hell outta me, thought it wouldn't but the last few days it's just become annoying. Prior to them going out completely they used to flicker on and off so assumed it was a loose connection. Now they've gone out altogether I'm thinking the LED's have packed in or the wires broken free.

Yeah, de-mister button broke.
Couldn't buy the button on it's own and didn't fancy buying a replacement A/C unit just for the button, so made my own. I'll replace it when I find someone breaking an 8 and prepared to sell just the button.

Specialpowers, looking at that pic it looks like the head unit's still in place and the fronts somehow been removed, does it clip off? Makes the job a lot easier if it does.

Not sure, sorry. But from the pic it looks as if the case has been broken.
I'd think that the easiest option would be to replace the entire h/u, with another stock system, or a conversion kit and aftermarket double din.
It might be worth taking the current one out though (as a complete unit), and seeing if you can get to that circuit board.
