Help... I must be stupid... can't seem to get this right.

Ok.. So I really want an Ipod kit for the 8. But I want to make sure that the software is right. I was told to hold the "text" button, then hold down the #1 at the same time right? It always just beeps and reset all my audio (bass, treble) settings. If I hold the "text" and #1 at the exact same time... it resets the #1 radio setting. Of course, I'm doing this with the radio on... what am I doing wrong here? Thanks for all the help guys!!!
