HELP! Temperature Control Gone Mad

Hi everyone,

I was cleaning up the car today, it was switched off and I was cleaning the black shiny dash area around the stereo with a cloth (most of the buttons were getting pressed). Then I start the car, my AC is on (lights are all working) but its blowing super hot air. So I turn the temperature **** all the way to cold and just hold it down that way hard, AC starts blowing cold air again. The moment i let the **** go it starts to blow super hot air.

I have taken the stereo out (pulled it out a bit) to install the audiolink ipod adapter a couple of months ago.

Any idea what is causing this? any help is appreciated!

THanks!

Oh by the way it is a 2005 GT MT still under warranty.

Cold solder connections on the control board. There is a DIY repair posted on how to fix it. It will save you a lot of money.

Thanks, but if the car is under warranty, I am hoping Mazda would take care of it.

Also, doesnt the soldering stop the heater from working?

mazda should fix it for you.

why would soldering the circuit board keep the heater from working?

The control is a potentiometer that is soldered to a circuit board. A lot of the cars, including mine, have had this problem. They didn't use enough heat in making the solder connection and created a cold solder joint. After a while, this connection brakes and you can turn the **** and not get any response. I haven't fixed mine yet. I can wiggle the ****, make a connection and get it to work most of the time.

Oh I see, thanks for the info.

So how do you get different levels of temperature to work if it works only when you "wiggle" it. Mine is fully hot air until i push all the way to the cold and hold it there. I felt its a connection issue too, but didn't think that was the soldering.

I will just take it to mazda and see. I have too many things wired in there (radar detector, audiolink and bluetooth) that I probably should take out before taking the car in...otherwise they might throw "warranty void" fit.
