The nav system will not play DVDs. it only reads map discs. At some point, mazda changed manufacturers for the nav unit, and as such, older versions no longer have map updates available (the 04's for sure, I don't know if it was the 05's or 06's that started getting the new nav systems)
There are a couple aftermarket boxes that will allow you to splice into the video cable for the nav unit, and connect an auxiliary video source, such as a DVD player, rear view camera, or car computer. Anything with an RCA or S-video output can be connected to the boxes. If you search around this forum, you can find more info about them. I don't remember much about them off the top of my head other then the fact they arent cheap.
If you are using an auxiliary video source with such a box, the nav joystick will not work. It only works with the OEM nav system as far as i know.
