I bought the MP3 cd player unit and really hate the thought of a 6 disc in-dash unit collecting dust. Why couldn't you just disassemble both units and put the laser and any related chips from the MP3 unit into the 6-Disc unit and come out with a 6-Disc MP3 player?

Going even furhter, why couldn't you swap the laser or chips out in the DVD Nav player with ones with full blown DVD capabilities.

Your thoughts....

I think the electronics might not fit the unit.

The dvd nav has its own electronics and probably will not fit into the head unit along with the mp3 HU.

also i know i wouldnt want to mess up every media device in my car just to experement with those ideas.

isnt an mp3 cd player enough? 100+songs on 1 cd is plenty for me.

and i added the price up and found that buying an ipod and and something to hook it into your unit would be cheaper than buying a whole HU.

The mp3 HU and the 6 disc HU are made by two different companies so your SOL. Same goes for the NAV system I believe.

And, the firmware is probably different so 'just' a hardware swap wouldn't seal the deal.

If your going to go through the trouble of soldering and what not, what not just build a car pc and be done with it. You could call it the 'infinite' disk mp3 player.

you're talking about spending a tremendous amount of time to do something that an Ipod with an adapter can do in about 30 mins.
