I think I ruined my head unit!

I was attempting to install my auxmod line-in and now I've got problems. I couldn't get the freakin' wiring harness off the headunit, but I noticed I could see the Tape/MD slot for Slyfex unit I purchased. So managed to get the unit in and attach a cable to it, but after I got everything back together, I have no power to the headunit (the car and air controls work). I have a couple of theories and if anyone wants to chime in, be my guest:

1) The power cable came unplugged while I was wrestling with the other harnesses
2) I shorted the system and it's toast
3) Fuse

Also, if anyone knows the 'magical secret' to getting those harnesses off, please enlighten me (I did mangage to get one, but the middle one was not budging).

PS I didn't bother to unplug the battery (okay, so I'm a big dumbass).

Thanks for any help.

The first is to look the fuses down on your seat at the left side,if you have a tester or lamp you have to check if the both sides of the fuse have 12 v,y there's one witout current in a side replace it,if all are right, and the connectors are well locked you probably done something wrong and damage your HU,sorry, but if you do the things well you dont have to take battery out i,ve never do it in my onstallations (more than 4 times) and never had problems. Good luck

The fuses are okay. I didn't disconnect the battery because I read so many DIYs that said don't bother. The problem (I think) is that I tried to install the auxmod with the HU still plugged in. Either way, I'm sure some of it's just bad luck; I don't think it's because I did something grossly stupid or negligent (other than being too lazy to disconnect the negative battery cable - it takes only 30 seconds).

I think there is a reason that manufacturers strongly recommend disconnecting the battery. It doesn't mean something bad will happen every time, but the potential is there. I hope at least some people will learn from my mistake (an expensive mistake) and disconnect their batteries before working on the electrical system.
