Installing Stock Nav System In An Rx8
is it possible to install the stock nav system to my rx-8 if it doesn't already have one in there? i have a portable one, but i want the original nav system. thanks !

hm, i see. okay thanks. is there any other suggestions you might have to installing one or are my choices pretty much slim to none because the whole cd unit isn't made for anything aftermarket? unless of course if i use one of those kits, but i hear they disable some other things .. like the AC and hazard lights.

if you want a screen to pop up like the navi, then there is no alternative to it right now. if you want to get one of the built in computers for the unit, it is quite expensive as well, but i've only heard of the steering wheel controls not working. most people have simply gone with a computer placed on the head unit where the stock navi is suppose to go. then again, everyone can see it's there because it is out in the open.

It's actually not as bad as you think. I have been able to find 2 factory NAV systems out of wrecked 8's. I got them for under $250 each....just pay someone to install it. There are other options but the factory flip screen is the bomb!!!

My suggestion...
Do some searching and snag the stock nav dash panel from a salvage yard. Do some research on places like http://www.mp3car.com and build a car computer. You can get nav, mp3s, DVD, Divx, internet, bluetooth phone and more. To be honest... it is getting easier and easier to do if you want a Windows Xp based system. Here's a short breakdown...
monitor- Pickup a 7" LCD VGA monitor, remove from case and install the LCD panel in place of the stock mazda one in the nav dash panel.
CPU - depends on your preference and budget. A new VIA EPIA SP 13000 or MII 13000 would be enough to do what you need. Pair it up with a VroomPC case or a 1DIN sized case (to mount in the console where the stock NAV CPU mounts).
Software - Windows XP and add a "front end"... packaged commercial ones like Centrafuse and Streetdeck will be the easiest to install, likely have fewer "quirks" and both come with navigation software integrated. RoadRunner and Frodoplayer are two very popular front ends, but will probably require a bit more technical knowledge to get them running.
Additional hardware - GPS "mouse" receiver, automotive power supply, and "Car2PC adapater" and P.I.E. adapater. The Car2PC and P.I.E adapters together will connect the audio from your PC to the stock Mazda headunit and also allow you to control your PC via the stock steering wheel controls.
Total cost should run you around $1,000 - $,2000 depending on what hardware and software setup you go with.

Japan8 is correct:
BTW: It's going to cost me around $1800 total for my CarPC (OEM Housing, Xenarc 7" TouchScreen, and actual PC. Chances are i'll be mounting the PC in the glove compartment for easy access and easy installation...but theres a chance that I'll put the PC in the trunk...I just don't want to run the wires!

You could buy four top of the line Garmin GPS's for the price of a dealer installed nav, and they have far more up to date software. And you can take your Garmin with you on trips or move it to other vehicles.
Not as esthetically pleasing perhaps as a pop-up built in, but definitely an alternative to consider.
