iPhone 4 and OEM iPod adapter
I recently got an iPhone 4. It does work with the OEM adapter (I have 9.53 firmware) BUT (a) it does not charge the phone and (b) the old trick that I used with my iPod touch of holding down the home button to regain control through the iPod does not work (it calls up voice control).
I also discovered that the voice control didn't control the iPod, but the phone part which I have paired with a Bluetooth speakerphone. Me: "Play songs by Nirvana" Phone: "Calling Nirvana. Sorry, no records found".
Also, when I get a call the music just keeps thumping.
The phone gave me a warning about diminished call quality when I plugged it into the adapter but I haven't noticed any problems yet.
Then I found out that Pandora isn't available in Canada!
I like the phone but, dang it, integration into my life has not been as seamless as I had hoped.

unrelated, but maybe you can answer my question.
i bought the OEM adapter when it first came out and it only functioned with certain ipods. my iphone 3g never worked with it, and now my old refurb nano is dying. is it possible to update the firmware in order for newer ipods to work? or am i stuck trying to track down an older ipod? thanks.

I have no idea why a 3G wouldn't work with it while the iPhone 4 does.
By the way I solved my charging problem with a Firewire to USB adapter from Griffin.
Now I just need someone to do an App that disables Pin 21 (which is the one that tells the iPod it is being used an as accessory)...then I could control the iPod through the touchscreen.

i'm assuming because i bought the adapter when it first came out, which i think was back in '05, so it only supported certain ipod models. any idea about whether it's possible to update the firmware on it?

At this point you may as well move to a different adapter (such as one that allows text display in the dash). What's your radio firmware? Mine is 9.53 so I'm pretty much stuck with the OEM adapter.

Well I solved my recharging problem with a FireWire to USB adapter from Griffin. The music does cut out nicely when I get a call...no more excuses for ignoring my wife while on the road. A nice thing is that when the phone is goes to "sleep", when I press the button it shows the album cover and track name. Although I still can't control the iPod through the phone. Bluetooth audio quality is way better than with my old BlackBerry.
I bought a dash vent mount from Arkon...now I have a handsfree phone, music player, and car computer all in one and in easy reach. Not perfect, but darn close to it.
