Just to update in case anyone doesn't know, the Mazda interface does not need 9.55 or higher firmware. I have 9.53 and it works fine.

The Mazda iPod adapter is SLOW. i mean really reall S.L.O.W. compared to the audiolink. I have both and both have there quirks. I am sticking with the audiolink for now.

I went with the Mazda unit because of the firmware issue. I'll take a little pause now and then over having to remove the head unit, ship it off for a $100 upgrade, and then re-install it. This is a good alternative for 8s with pre 9.55 firmware, IMHO.

Hey give the upgrade a break, it is very easy and is done by an engineer who maintains the warranty 100%. Besides hundreds (maybe thousands, you'd have to ask Thew) have been done.

Sorry True, don't mean to knock the upgrade. I'm sure it's great. It's just that all of the head unit removal and reinstall time and effort is on MY end. And my 57 year old body only wants to go thru what I did to install the Mazda unit ONCE. I don't bend into pretzel positions under the dash as easily as I did 20 years ago!

would the XM Direct hookup mentioned by the OP require firmware > 9.55 or would it work on 04's with the older firmware?

The ipod adapter/xm direct hookup described in this thread will not need a firmware upgrade. It uses the MD/Tape interface as described earlier in this thread.

Unfortunately there are no updates on this...so I don't want to get hopes up...I'm still working on it. There is a solution but I may need your guys's help to contact...we will find out soon.

It plays all songs at 1/2 speed. But that's OK, cause it makes the '8 seem like it's moving twice as fast!!!

So how is the RX8 a slow car?

I was inquiring about the behavior of the unit, smartass. What do you 'mean' by slow, not 'what is the meaning' of slow. Sorry if you're slow.

'kay. I'll keep you updated.

Anyway, I'll probably go with Mazda's, despite that 'slow' comment and the weird playlists. Can't bother upgrading the firmware.

The adapter for this thread does not require a firmware upgrade, one guy was referring to the audiolink unit.

Is this the adapter for this thread? If it is, it states 9.55 or higher firmware.

The PIE MAZ/PC-ALP allows you to connect most Alpine 6 disc CD changers to most 2002 to 2005 Mazda factory radios through the 16-pin CD changer port located in the rear of the radio. * RX8 2004-2006* Tribute 2003-2004 Miata 2003 - 2005 B-Series Truck 2003-2004 * Firemware must be ver 9.55 or higher to work correctly. WE can upgrade your HU just ask.

I just noticed a typo there

Actually that is an entirely different unit. A crystal clear audio input we have sold for over two years. It is not ipod specific...people use it for audio in with all sorts of mp3 players, video game systems (ie me , computers, and dvd players.

I know...I wish the manufacturer would hop on this thread...unfortuantely they got a bit big for their britches.

I'm going to try to get their public contact information then maybe through a group effort we can get the ball finally rolling.
