I'll cough up the info

It is the scan Hardware/Software by Hymee Enhanced and it is made for our car and has a beautiful interface that looks much like something else in our car

Hymee is based in Australia and the product works in all can based cars but is specifically designed for our RX-8 and that is the really cool part. In the US the only known vendor is and will be www.rx8garage.net which is transitioning to mazdaparts.com

the name of the product is sCANalyser and ask Takahashi how I know that

Additional things

For the thing I was thinking about making, would indeed be a car-puter.... Things for this display I was thinking about (and are sadly lacking) would be as follows:

Fuel functions:
DTE - Drive till empty
MPG - Running miles per gallon averaged

Over-Rev warning:
Flashing display (kinda like the old atari missile command game). I dont know about you guys... but I cant hear that damn buzzer unless I turn everything off and I am expecting it to come on.

Trip meters:
Several different versions of these.

Temperature:
Inside and out..... hell I could even go as far as calculating what the dew-point WOULD be inside the car....lol

No-one wants to carry a laptop inside there car all the time.... especially on trips with the wife and kids.

Besides.... if your relying on Windows to do ANYTHING in your car. You are taking your life and everyone around you and putting in Microsofts hands.... Thats either STUPID or INSANE, take your pick.

BTW.... I would love to see someone have to reboot their car everyday before you go to work....HAHAHAHAHA :O

I am still trying to figure out how I would implement this and gauging interest my other members. Some of the features I would like to include would require under dash/hood wiring. So puting the main CPU there would be best and just doing usb to the display and buttons. Packaging the LCD should be a no brainer... choosing the right CPU/MPU (input/outputs/AD conv) that is cost effective and allowing for upgrades later is paramount in my eyes.

Currently I am looking at Hitachi H8 or M16...

PM me, let's talk. I'm planning this on OS X / Linux. A developer will be starting with a CANbus utility, with a digital dash / EICAS-type system later. No other details or timeframe yet. Any help would be appreciated.

many people and their experience would disagree with you.

Toyota/Lexus would disagree with you (running Win Auto/Win CE)...
