Looking for a High Output Alternator
Well as the title states I'm looking for a high output alternator for my 8. I've tried google, calling around town and the forum search button but haven't had any luck. I've seen a couple crazy audio setups so someone must have found a replacement. Any help you can give me would be appreciated.

Nice. I didn't know they could be rebuilt into anything more then they started out as. I'll look into that tomarrow. Thank you.

i will be going through them directly, as i work in a specialty car audio retailer.
even though you CAN have an alternator "rebuilt" (read rewound), it is not generally a good idea. drop the guys over at ohio generator a line, and they will fill you in. also, if i remember, the alternator from them will be approximately 180 amps hot rated.

Though I understand where you are coming from, I don't necessarily agree. I did take for granted that the consumer would talk to the shop and see if they were capable of the required task.
Now this is only an opinion, but if a alternator is "rebuilt" (read rewound) properly, it will have all new major components. There are only so many ways to wind copper around a core, so as long as the alternator is not so overbuilt that it can not remain cool, the major issues become the voltage regulators & recitifiers. As long as quality rectifiers & condensers are used, it should produce a nice quiet DC voltage.
One issue often overlooked is the rpm at which the voltage regulator turns on. If you do a lot of idling (say car shows etc.), the lower the better. If not, it isn't as important, especially in our lovely high revving rotories.
For full SQ competition vehicles, there probably are some advantages to some of the HO Alternator Manufacturers that cater to the Audio Market, but for most, (and without knowing prices) I would imagine this to be an expensive route.
However, I will talk to "my guy" who has rebuilt hundreds of alternators, starters etc. for us over the years and see what his thoughts are on the subject.
Peace!!

im looking at the ORION HCCA 10.2 subwoofer. i want to put one if them in a ported box around 1.5 cubic feet. with a Hifonics BXi2607D amp which outputs 1700 watts at 2 ohm or a Hifonics BXi 2006D which outputs 1300 at 2 ohms.
i likw to listen to it LOUD for short periods of time(a song) and then just reasonably loud the rest. Sometimes i turn it off. What do you think it the best solution?
The 1300watt amp will underpower the sub as it is rated for 1500rms. is this setup possible without a new alternator and such??
thank you

I wonder if you could find a Ford alternator rated correctly that would work. Not sure of the mounting points, but externally the alternator looks like a late model Ford type.
How about a second battery for your amp?

so your basically saying that 1300 watts is too much power for the RX8 without upgrading the charging system...so what is the highest rated amp i can get?
should i rather get a jl 10w7 which is rated at 500rms. is that LOUD enough in 1.5 cubic foot ported enclosure.
i dunno any other combination that would be louder. thanks for your help.
