Because after this shop chops your wiring harness to pieces and can't make it work, you're going to have to take it back to Mazda to fix the shops mistakes.

If they chop up the main wiring harness, then the whole thing has to be replaced. Mazda is not going to just solder a new connector on the end. You do NOT want to know what a main wiring harness costs, and you do NOT want to know how many hours of labor it will take to install. Furthermore, it will not be covered under warranty. So what you are looking at is the chance to pay 2-4 THOUSAND dollars, to have a chop shop break your car, and have Mazda put it right again.

Not. Worth. The risk.

The stock head unit isn't even that bad in the 8's. It's the speakers and amp that are utter garbage. Leave the stock head unit alone until a plug and play kit comes along. You will thank us later. A decent 4 channel LOC tied to a 4 channel amp, and 2 channel sub amp, new cabin speakers, and a sub would get you way more boom for your buck then any head unit upgrade will. A non stock head unit just says to thieves: "Valuables inside:Break glass for free money."

Kit for '09s

njbrodeur87 - I wish you luck (really). I would be interested in seeing pics after the install is complete. For those owners with '09s who are a little less adventurous, call Metra once a week and have your friends do the same. They will build a kit when they see demand, and that is measured by requests.

I hope everything goes well for you dude. You're gonna be SOL if it doesn't.

Post pics of the final install (or it didn't happen) and please, tell us how your fancy new head unit sounds on your stock amp and speakers.

I was told about a year ago that a shop would do the same thing for me. Relocate the stock radio to the trunk, remove the HVAC controls from the stock display and make a customer dash piece. I was quoted nearly $2K for the labor alone. Whomever you are taking it to either doesn't know what they are getting into, has no experience what-so-ever with what you want done or are just going to do the work and bill you for the labor and parts. There is a reason why you can't even get a plug-n-play unit like a Metra kit that normally runs $30 for the 8 for less than $150 is it (???).

um first off 6th ave is a very reputable company. Second the guy there has been doing it for 15 years at 6th ave, so just cause that guy at your place was ripping you off for over 2000 ant my fault...The total for me was 1400. Included labor, buliding the dash kit, HD RADIO, SIRIUS RADIO, and the pioneer 90bt. Easily a fair price espically for a store. And i am not losing my hvac controls either nor taking out the display becuse that is the whole point of using the OEM and hiding it , to keep display working and the hvac controls.

Anywayz..today is the second day of install out of three. That means first day went with no problems. I am calling today after work to see the progress and how everything is going. I will post here when i find out how everything is going after 6 when i call.

Uh oh. I wonder if all is ok??!!

Oh, BTW, I'm a lurker here. Bought a used '06 RX8 for 13,500.. had only 13, 599 miles on it. I'm just trying to learn as much as I can about the Wankel. This forum is very informative.

OK something is off here.
First the 09 s2 has a separate control for the AC/heater and info display panel it is not in the stereo like it is in the early models. So no need for a new aux box.

There is a factory double din dash piece that can be had from Mazda Japan for the 09 model I hear it is expensive though.

check this out.

Man, you guys are such haters. The guy, as far as we can tell with what he's said and from the one picture, has accomplished exactly what he set out for. We warned him of the possible negatives, and with that in mind he did it regardless and it looks good. Cut him some clack.

OP, that dash peice...was it custom made...? If so the shop did a stellar job.

Have any pictures of the in trunk?

Sweet deal. Glad everything worked out. I was really worried about seeing one of those Circuit City hack jobs where a shop does thousands in damage to a car while trying to do something like this.

Very happy this is not the case. Enjoy your new system

hey everyone thanks for all the responses. The dash kit was indeed a custom one made and yes it did come out perfect and looks really good. The shop is located on US 22 and of course its called 6th ave electronics. Everything works perfect and the bose sound system sounds jsut as it did, even though ill prob get soem better speakers from 6th ave later one either way. I can take pics of the truck if u want but idk why you would want me to lol its anempty trunk like i said now wires or nothing or there. Best of luck to everyone with theire cars as well.

P.S. yea its an auto, i dont liek driving manual so shush

Uh ok then. So not "for all the doubters" because it did NOT indeed work for the 09. You had to have a dash piece custom made for it. All your doubters were correct. The metra kit DOES NOT work for the 09s.

Hehe had to laugh... Rx-9 is what my friend tells me he's gonna buy when he gets a car so he'll get a cooler car than me. xD He's completely stupid when it comes to cars though and I keep explaining how there is no Rx-9 ^^
