CA Metra kit install - No Audio

i am installing a JVC KW-Nt30HD and i have tried the RCA splice route and the crimping of the wires together and still no audio. i have checked the audio fuse and its still good. what could the problem be?

Can you elaborate on the RCA splicing? What is the purpose of this? I never had to splice anything when I installed my Metra kit a year ago.

Those tabs are a bugger sometimes! It should have came with 2 spares - I would just replace one of them. Once they are in securely on both ends they shouldn't come loose

i tried. i even took off the tabs from the oem radio but every time i have to take off the faceplate for some reason it always comes off the faceplate and falls back into the dash. theres probably 4 tabs back in there. what i ended up doing was super gluing the tab to the faceplate so it wont come off anymore. heck all the other tabs dont come off the plate when the faceplate is removed.

on a side note, i need to update my axxess box, and it turns out metra does have an update cable, but they wanted 50 bucks just for the cable that im probably going to use for 2 minutes.
the other option is to send the box in so that they can update it, which i have yet to find out the price on.

There's a HUGE thread in this forum of users sending an update cable around the world to each other for free. Just the cost to ship it to the next person in line. However, I think it may have recently stalled out because someone decided to become a thief.

If you can find out what the cable looks like, odds are you can find one on eBay. Maybe it's built for another purpose, but will probably work. $50 for an F-in cable is ridiculous.

yea i read that whole thread, which is why i contacted metra because it seems like someone was being greedy on a cable that they probably would not need after they used it, or was just being lazy.

heres what metra linked me to.

What an Fin rip. They design a product that needs to be updated to work probably, and then gouge the F out of you for the update. I'd be irate if I were you.

Secondly, the 4-pin connector looks exactly like what is used in PC's to power an old floppy drive or to supplement power to an older video card. Or even some 4-pin computer fans.

How it connects to the USB, of course I don't know. I wouldn't suggest cutting a USB cable and attempting to make one without knowing more info. But point being is that cable is nothing special. It's probably costs 10 cents to make.

the sad part is i have a couple boxes of old computer junk, that it would be so easy for me to make one. i just dont want to risk frying the axxess box just to test it out.

so it turns out that its not possible to make the cable because i contacted metra and they said that there is a "piracy" chip right after the usb dondle to prevent other companies from replicating, which is why you need to install drivers using their WebXXPress Updater in order to update the Axxess box itself before hand.

but the good news is that you can send in the Axxess box to them for free [you pay shipping to them] and they will update the Axxess box for you.

on a side note, they also stated they do not make money from selling the cable. not sure why that is, considering i see the cable go for around $50-$80 depending on where you purchase it.

so its been a while with the new head unit in place, but i have encountered another minor problem.

the problem is there is a high pitched whine coming from the speakers, and the higher speed/rpms the higher pitched the sound gets. at first i thought it could be coming from the short shifter, because it does make noises also, but when i pop off the face of the head unit [screen] the noise disappears.

the only thing i can think of is the "speed wire sensor" for the gps, but im not 100% sure on that and dont want to go back in and start butchering all the wiring.

but if i have the car in neutral, no noise or static.

Very common. It's gonna be a grounding issue. I'd reground the headunit directly to chassis to start with. That should AT LEAST help, if not cure it entirely. Also make sure no bare connections are leaning against anything else. Especially those RCA connections.

Correct. Just run the ground wire from your headunit right to anything metal behind the dash. In fact, a lot of headunit harnesses are now coming with an extended ground wire with a ring terminal already crimped on.

ahh damn, i remember that portion of the wire, i tossed it.

anyway there is a 10mm bronze bolt right around the shifter or under the cointray/cig lighter. hopefully this will be feasible.
im just waiting on metra to send back my axxess box [sent it in to get it updated rather than paying 55 bucks for the update cable]

Use a strand of speaker wire, crimp it to the ground and you'll have plenty of wire to run to anything metal. Just make sure if the metal is painted, to grind it til it's bare. I work at an audio store and we have plenty of people come in with this problem all the time. It actually happened with my 8 as well.

thanks guys, but i just got my axxess box from metra and im still having issues.

1: when i hold the mode button it doesnt do anything. i know the dummy light is supposed to blink so that i can change the time/display
2. when i press the front defroster, nothing happens, no LED. but the rear works fine.
3. doesnt let me choose between recirculate and fresh are. always fresh air

on the issue with ground, i took a picture because i dont want to have to do this more than once just to get it right. so there are a couple bolts here and there. can you guys recommend the best one to anchor it to.
this one is right under the ash tray

Don't really matter where you ground it. Just make sure it's tight and directly on bare metal. Scuff/sand the painted area before grounding. There's nothing behind the headunit? Pretty sure that's where mine was grounded. (It's been too long)

As for the Axxess box.... I really don't know. When most people have those problems, a firmware update seems to be the solution. I'd call Metra and ask.

hmm behind the head unit? so u didnt use the ground on the metra harness either?

the problem about my 2 locations is that theres [bare]metal already under the bolt and then to the chassis [painted]

i have been talking to metra, im talking to the lead tech via email, he has been very helpful but when i mailed my metra kit, he said he would take care of it personally.
when i told him i got it back yesterday, he told me no one gave him any packages so i guess someone either took it and supposedly "updated it" or just repackaged it and sent it back to me. as far as i can tell it doesnt seem updated.

It really doesn't matter. Just ground it somewhere.

And that sucks about your Axxess box.

Where is the head unit amplifier that you connected the blue/white wire to?

There is a blue/white wire on my aftermarket radio and then there is a blue/white wire that is part of one of the metra harnesses. Do I connect those to wires or what in order to get audio?
