thanks, it'll be a while before I install...got to get it approved by the wife...but I'll eventually post pics...I am not sure if I am going to try it this way or not, but I just don't like the pocket on the single din, and I HATE the trim ring on it! It just looks thrown together...I think I'd fiberglass one before I did that...

My Bose HU finally went out on me, so I finally made it to Car Toys and got an Alpine CDA-9886 installed. I had great difficulty finding the Metra kit, but surprisingly Car Toys had the single din with flat black finish (99-7510)! Since radio installation was free, I went ahead and let them install the whole thing, and everything worked out well. I'm quite surprised all the speakers and tweeters still works!

On in-dash dvd players, when you turn the key off the screen automatically closes, does anyone know how to disable that so it will stay open with the key and car off? so it will stay open and up even when just parked?

Thats going to be a function of the player itself. Unless your specific player has a menu option to change it, the only way to achieve this would be to have a switch inline with the red IGN wire. Attach this to yellow BATT wire. Pull up to park, flip the switch, turn off the car, headunit remains on. Keep in mind that this will run your battery down while playing. If you forget to flip the switch back, you'll probably have a dead battery in the morning.

EDIT: After re-reading your post.... do you want to use the player without the key being in the ignition? Or do you just want the screen to remain in the out position constantly? If so, is this a permanent thing you want? Or just occasionally?

oh ok, no i dont want it to run while im parked i just want it to stay up while its parked, for instance if i put my car in HIN and want to show that i have a flip screen i want to leave it in the up position while im walking around and the car is off and parked so i dont have to leave the key in it and sit there with it, then when i walk around take the key out and have it close then when ppl look at it they wont see the flip screen, know what i mean?

i dont know if theres an option on the hu it self, what if i disconnected the battery while it was up? or if there was a wire i could snip to keep it from auto closing

Anyone who has the double-din, can you confirm that the two plates from metra secure onto your radio then secure onto the two bolts that hold down the A/C vents?

I'm going to install mine tomorrow and I'm quite sure that that's where the plates go.

I am sure there's an option to keep it up.
I am running a toggle switch with mine so that I can keep it on even when the key is not in the ignition. I know that would allow you to keep a demo going, but wouldn't allow you to have it up and off.

Oh, suck, doing it that way kills your battery still tho right? on mine i have an option to run it on either ground or on battery, i wonder if i did the toggle switch and ran it on ground and not the battery if that would work and not kill the batter? I emailed the mfgr support to see what they say, i went through all the options on the hu but havnt found an option to leave it up, i think it looks so much nicer when its up all the time rather then closed, just looks alot nicer and cleaner

I have been doing car audio for a while now professionally, and that's how I do every high end install. Most people want to play with the radio, and not worry about the door ajar sound etc... If the radio is off, and assuming you don't have any relay controlled capacitors, there is minimal draw on the battery. Not enough for it to go dead if you drive it daily.
As far as the "ground" and "battery" question. I am not sure what you mean. Without the engine running, the radio only draws power from the battery. (It really only draws from the battery all the time, but that's a whole 'nother rant) There's no way around this.
I would imagine the radio "knows" when you lose power to the switched power, as it stays up off but after you remove the switched power (by turning the key off) it folds up. Leaving the switched power controlled via toggle won't necessarily draw anymore from the battery when you turn the toggle to off and fold the radio up. The toggle is your way have the best of both worlds.

oh ok, so toggle is my best option then yeah? if so i will be doing that then. how do i do that? get a toggle switch have one wire going to red ign wire and yellow bat wire then another wire for ground? do i keep the yellow wire attached to where it is as well or just have the yellow wire strictly for the toggle?

so you can turn the radio off and the thing stays up, but as soon as you turn the key off it folds up?

I would put the toggle where the dash dimmer and the dsc buttons are. Its really simple to do, and most auto parts stores have toggles that will look right in our cars.

Let me know (via pm) if I can help in anyway.

when i turn the key off and take key out it closes not folds up, and yeah thats where im going to put it i have another toggle there already for me to have it up and on while driving there is another empty slot so this will be where i will put the toggle to keep the screen up.

i just need help on the wire'ing, so on the toggle i will have a wire conntecting to red ign wire and to yellow bat wire, do i keep yellow bat wire plug into where it is and add the toggle to it? or do i have the yellow wire just strictly to the toggle? then of course another wire on the toggle to ground yeah?

that's what I meant by fold up, my bad. But you can turn the radio off with the ignition ON and it will stay up right?
I pulled my wires straight from my battery.
But in your case, I 'd just find the constant power and tap into it, take it over to one side of your toggle and pull another one back to the switched power lead on your radio from the other side of the toggle.
Just make sure you tape off the original switched lead coming from the vehicle harness.
There's no ground or anything to worry about, unless the toggle is illuminated. All the toggle does is make the two wires into one when closed (ON)

you just tap the yellow wire and take it to the toggle and take another wire (connected to the other side of the toggle) back to the radio's red, right.

So every high-end install you do has some cheesy switch for this? Ever heard of the ACC key position? That stops your door chime right there. And if you really wanted to do this, you could just put a switch inline the yellow wire only. When the headunit is on and you're ready to park, flip the switch to open the circuit, killing power to the headunit. Regardless of voltage on the red wire, it has no power to pull the LCD back in. Same thing as pulling the fuse.

.....Which isn't a bad idea BTW. Since you'll only be doing like once a year.

wow aren't you an a$$hole?

The switch is usually pretty tasteful, depending on the cst's request. Most of the time I use an oem switch.

And the acc. position leaves the door buzzing on, with on usually leaving the buzzer silent but running the instruments, which is what most of my folks want to avoid.

And as far as pulling the fuse, or interrupting constant power, I'd like to avoid having reset all the crap on my radio, even if it is once a year. Especially if those settings impact the sound of the system...

Thanks though.

Sweetheart, I've been an ******* since day one on this board. But rest assured you haven't seen nothing yet. When I break your *****, you'll be reporting me to the mods with the quickness.

Owens, just pull the damn fuse. You and I both know you don't have anything crazy for EQ settings (No time alignment, etc), nobody uses radio presets anymore, and it takes 15 seconds to set your clock. Don't hack up your 8 with some fugly AutoZone switch that you'll use a total of three times. This kid's poor diction, alone, should clue you in on his intelligence and attention to detail.

"Thanks though"

please tell me more about my poor diction? Oh, and when was the last time you were paid for an install? Taste and attention to detail? Kid?

How about you and I meet up and send you home having to report how you got worked by a kid with poor diction and zero attention to detail.

I think my ***** will be just fine.

Shouldn't you correct yourself in that the acc position does leave the door ajar sound on?

You have already demonstrated your stupidity.

Haha lmao, good comic relief lol, thanks firebirddude, I think I will just tap into yellow tho and add the switch and put it right next to my toggle for the player to be up while driving, I also want to have it stay up while parked so when people check out my car they can see the screen, don't want people to see inside with it closed and think I have some funky looking deck lol.

And I don't think your an a$$hole lol, I think you know your stuff, everyone has there own opinions, so can we get back to the thread and end the bickering? Lol
