Is my sub on the verge of death?

Is my sub on the verge of death?
I've had my subs installed in a Zenclosures box in my car since June and recently I made the Metra conversion with an alpine head unit.
I have 2 type r's and a hifonics 1606d.
I had some problems with my new head unit so I decided to send it back for some repairs but while troubleshooting, I noticed there was either
a) an extremely bad rattle,
or
b) a blown sub.
After getting it all working, I came home one day to notice one of my subs fell out of the box! Turns out almost 3/4 of the screws were stripped so I took them both out and rotated them.
I just did the "push the sub in and out and listen for a crunch" but I didn't hear anything like that. It has exact same motion as the other one EXCEPT, when I push it rapidly, it makes a noise that sounds like air is flowing through it.
to mimic the sound, put you lips in the shape of an "O" and breath quickly in and out.... Sounds EXACTLY the same.
Any ideas? thx4time!

Take the subs out, get out your DMM, measure the resistance on the coils of the sub and compare with the factory specs. If the specs are no where near each other, or the resistance is out of range, your speaker/s is/are kapoot!
If they are comparable to the factory specs I would look elsewhere for your problem.
BTW, a sub not mounted correctly in the box can cause a rattle noise; don't ask me how i know
Best of luck,
Michael

It probably shouldn't be there. If everything checks out, just make sure that the subs are mounted properly in your enclosure. If they aren't, air will leak out and all sorts of sounds can occur, including a rattling sound.

Examine the surrounds on the sub closely (the foam rubber bit that connects the top of the cone to the sub frame) They can get torn from the sub overextending itself. If you do find tears, there are ways to repair them with some rubber cement I think. I've never done it though, so you'd want to look up a how to.
